Dang it, I started to do my post about this last night and decided to wait until morning.
ReplyDeleteThis bill, H.R. 40, has come up every year since 1989 without even getting a vote. Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker is one of the sponsors. Fellow candidates Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Julian Castro, Pete Buttigieg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar and Beto O'Rourke have all come out in support of the bill. The bill merely "establishes a commission to examine the institution of slavery...and the impact of these forces on living African Americans to make recommendations to the Congress on appropriate remedies." But yet it hasn't received a vote in 30 years.
