But... if we accept that "everyone's purpose [is] a gift from a higher power," the meanings of our lives become hostage to the possibility that no such power exists. I can't accept that contingency, I have to believe that meaning is possible whether there be "higher powers" or not. And yet, I'm grateful for that youngster's ability to find solace in his own conviction.
