I just finished reading a short book - "Dark sky rising : Reconstruction and the dawn of Jim Crow" by Henry Louis Gates.
ReplyDeleteIt is aimed more at younger readers, but gives anyone a brief review of the obstacles and oppression recently freed slaves faced after the Civil War ended and how after a few years. Many were basically abandoned to cruel and inhumane treatment. There were some inspiring stories and individuals who survived that era and whose descendants would be instrumental in later Civil Rights efforts.
The pbs series based on his "Stony the Road" was very good. It's a story most Americans don't know, aren't encouraged to know. So, our national self-identity as defined by "emancipation" is still sharply distorted for most.
