Introductions

Let's introduce ourselves, Spring 2013 Intro to Philosophy co-philosophers! I'll start.

I'm Dr. Oliver, aka James P., aka Phil. I live in Nashville with my wife, two daughters, two dogs, and a cat named Zeus.

My birthday is Feb.14. Bring cake and candy to class that day.

My Ph.D. is from Vanderbilt. I'm originally from Missouri, near St. Louis. I'm a Cardinals fan. My undergrad degree is from Mizzou, in Columbia MO. (I wish my schools weren't in the SEC-I don't approve of major collegiate sports culture or of violence in football, but don't get me started.)

My philosophical expertise, such as it is, centers on the American philosophical tradition of William James. Last semester a student asked me to respond to a questionnaire. I did, and have continued to reflect on its excellent questions. "It was an honor..."

I post my thoughts regularly to my blogs Up@dawn and Delight Springs, among others, and to Twitter. Follow me if you want to. But of course, as Brian Cohen said, you don't have to follow anyone. (Extra credit if you get that reference... and real extra credit if you realize that my "extra credit" is usually rhetorical.)

Enough about me. Who are you? (Where are you from, where have you been, what do you like, who do you want to become,...?) Why are you here? (On Earth, in Tennessee, at MTSU, in philosophy class)?

(Hit "comments" below and post your introduction, then read your classmates'... Be sure to include your section number: H1, 14, or 16.)

Hello Dr. Oliver! It's nice to finally sorta-correspond with you!

My name is Morgan Hunlen, and I am a second semester Freshman from Decatur, GA, formerly a stand-alone city over 150 years ago but is now a suburb of Atlanta. I live with my mother and father and my derpy dog name Lucy (like the lady from the Peanuts comics).

My birthday is August 19th, but since it's like a week before I even get back to MTSU, I won't fault you for forgetting, so it's okay.

I'm an Aerospace major who wants to concentrate in Professional Pilot and possibly Flight Dispatch or Aviation Adminstration as well. I want to minor in either Japanese or Global Studies, although my dream minor would be Urban Planning or Urban Design, which I can more or less say is one of my hobbies.

Umm...I want to be a pilot when I grow up! I like looking at transportation design and city design in general, and I grew up collecting maps and brochures of every place I've ever gone. I think I'm growing up to be an urbanist. I like being a tourist and I love to travel, and one of my dreams is to visit Japan and Germany one day. Otherwise I've only been out of the county once, to Cozumel, Mexico, but I don't like counting it because It felt like I never really "left" the United States.

I like video games, comics, and animation, although I'm really shy about my hobbies so I never share them (I'm working on that). I have a blog where I typically indulge in them (http://jacktheartist.tumblr.com), and I keep most of my fangirling to there. I used to play baseball and soccer but sucked at both, so now I practice Kendo instead, where I'm only a little better. I LOVE biking and hiking, but I'm a horrible runner. And sometimes I try to be musical, but I'm not really good at either the French Horn or the Ocarina. Or singing. But I do like musicals, those are fun.

I'm at MTSU to learn how to be a well-rounded pilot as well as a well-rounded person, and I can credit the Buchanan Fellowship as the only way I'm able to even come close to affording the education I'm receiving. This class is required for me, but I feel like it's going to be a thought-provoking, engaging experience, so I'm really looking forward to it. I'm not looking forward to the half-mile sprint to my next class, however. :P

I'm sorry if this ran too long, or if it wasn't professional enough. But thank you for allowing me to extend a greeting to you!

  2. Hi, Morgan! That's a terrific introduction, thanks for being bold and going first. I mean second.

Do you know Prof. Buchanan's story? I didn't, really, 'til just the other day. I put up a little post about him on my "Up@dawn" blog (linked above, under the title "Every morning he gets up quite early"). Quite an inspiring guy, it turns out.

And as for sprinting between classes: you like biking, just pop by the rec center before class and check out one of their renta-bikes.

Not too long at all, though others who feel less talky should feel free to post shorter intros too. And you're plenty professional for me, you'll see on Thursday I prefer an informal approach.

    See you then!

Thank you for welcoming me! And yes, I've been discovering little bits and pieces about Professor Buchanan ever since I got here, and I've been learning he's quite an inspiring guy indeed. Your post about him was really interesting too!

I'm a HUGE fan of the rec center's rent-a-bike program, and I've basically been depending on it as my main mode of transportation to get around Murfreesboro. It's an AMAZING deal that just can't be beat.

    Hello, Dr. Oliver!

My name is Evan Lester, and I am a second-semester freshman from Columbia, Tennessee. I live with my mom, sister, and two dogs. One interesting fact about me that people are intrigued by is that I graduated from a class of 26 people!

My birthday is May 2nd, which is unfortunately the day before exams begin. Therefore, I will most likely be studying on my birthday!

The main reason I am studying at MTSU is because of the Aerospace program. I am an Aerospace major with a concentration in Flight Dispatch. I will also be going through the Air Traffic Control "add-on" course in the Aerospace department. Although my concentration is in Flight Dispatch, I will be happy to have a job as either a flight dispatcher or an air traffic controller. I still have not decided on a minor, but I am thinking about getting a minor in teaching. I am very fortunate to receive the Buchanan Fellowship to help reach my goals.

Another interesting fact about me is that I love sports! I play baseball and volleyball, and I am looking into playing these sports in the intramural program at the rec center in the future. I also enjoy traveling to many different places around the U.S. I have currently visited 26 states, and I hope that I will be able to visit all 50 in my life.

I am really looking forward to this class and the in-depth discussions throughout the semester! Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself!

  4. Hello, Dr. Oliver!

My name is Zach Hutcherson, I am classified as a Sophomore, but I am truly a second-semester Freshman. I was born and raised in East Tennesee in Greeneville, but most of my family is from Maryland and Virginia. I currently work for the MTSU Police Department as a Dispatcher.

My birthday is August 15th which gives me just enough time to celebrate before returning for classes.

I chose to attend MTSU for their Aerospace Program and modern campus. My major is Aerospace with a Professional Pilot concentration. I already have my pilot's license with an instrument rating and am studying for my commercial license this semester. If all goes to plan, I will be flying for Express Jet (A Delta Connection Carrier) once I turn 23.

My minor will either be in Homeland Security or Military Science, as I come from a military background. Prior to joining Express Jet, I am contemplating joining the Metro Nashville Police for a few years before transitioning into the airline industry.

When it comes to interesting facts, there isn't much to tell. I enjoy referring Basketball and Football, as well as umpiring Baseball. I travel frequently and have visited over half of the US States, almost every Caribbean country, several Central American countries, and several European countries.

I have enjoyed the opportunities the Buchanan Fellowship has afforded me and the people I have met because of it!

I am looking forward to the conversations and topics we will be discussing this semester!

  5. Hello Dr. Oliver!

My name is Emily Ball. I was born and raised just outside of Murfreesboro, TN. I wanted to stay home while going to college, so the Buchanan Scholarship really helped me reach my dreams. My birthday is August 1st.

I decided to attend mtsu to obtain my degree in Accounting. I plan on continuing and getting my Masters Degree, then become a CPA. My dream is to work in a private firm of some kind.

I love to play softball, but that is about the only sport I have ever been good at. My favorite thing to do is read. I have read thousands of books, and I never stop.

I have greatly enjoyed my time here at MTSU so far, and I can't wait until this semester starts!

    Hello Dr. Oliver,

First off, I would like to say that I really enjoy this blogging aspect of your teaching. I just finished reading a series that was centered around how important blogging is becoming (it was also mainly about zombies, but that's besides the point) and how much we can communicate and share ideas through it.

Anyways, my name is Stephany and I am a transfer student from California. I was born Rome, Georgia though, and graduated high school from a small town in North Georgia called LaFayette. My birthday is July 27th. I enlisted in the Army National Guard as a combat medic my senior year of high school, and although I love what I do and I am thankful for everything I have learned, I have decided that I do not want to pursue a career in the medical field. My passion is traveling and learning new things everyday, so I decided to come to MTSU to double major in Global Studies and French.

I chose to take Philosophy because it is a subject that I have always been interested in and I simply want to learn more about it.

I took a break from school this past year as I was moving back to the east coast and trying to figure out what I really wanted, but I am more than ready to get back into it, and I am definitely looking forward to this class.

  7. Welcome Evan, Zach, Emily, & Stephany!

Blogging does seem like a great way to extend the walls of our classroom, and it's a format lots of philosophers have taken to: http://philosophy.about.com/od/Philosophy-Now/a/Best-Online-Philosophy-Sources-Ii-Blogs.htm

In my case it's a motivator to get out of bed and write something while the morning coffee kicks in. That's my favorite time to write, in the hazy pre-dawn.

Next week we'll split into four discussion groups, and at least one of you from each group will put up a blog post right after each class summarizing the highlights of your group's discussion that day, and the rest of you will post additional comments before next class.

Also, you can do blog posts in lieu of conventional report essays. More on that later. For now, I'd love to read some more introductions. Who else is out there?

  8. Hey Dr. Oliver, James P, Phil,

My name is Kaitlyn or Ms. Bennett, extra credit if you caught the Pride and Prejudice reference, it's one of my favorite books. I'm a business major but I'm not sure why. I enjoy interesting conversations and sarcasm. I'm in Tennessee because of in-state tuition and I'm at MTSU because I haven't yet created a social media that goes viral and distracts all of the students in your class and I'm in your class because I actually enjoy pholosophy and you had the best teacher rating on ratemyprofessor.

I like reading and playing sports that you don't approve of but I hope we can get along anyway. I have a dog that sits when I tell him to and a boyfriend that doesn't. I despise public speaking, christmas wreaths on cars and instagram. I love reading peoples blogs, kayaking and design.

I checked out the video. It's interesting but I found it just as interesting that Malcolm Gladwell posted it and is part of the debate. I read "Outliers" (which I enjoyed and found redudant at the same time) but I didn't realize his involvement in cultural issues was so diverse. I do love football but I am interested in what others have to say on the issue so I'll definitely be considering this further.
      See you in class!

  11. Pleased to meet you Dr. Phil,

To start things off, I admire the work you've put into your blog. My two cents on your recent post - College football is obviously a waste of time... not to mention that sports are a waste of time in general. I see the concept of competition as nothing more than another ploy keeping human beings separated. Why must there always be a winner or loser? Each and every one of us is equal enough to be considered brothers and sisters, and the fact that primal entertainment methods, such as sports (don't even get me started on the idiot box - television), remains popular in our society proves that we are still a young species with a lot to learn, despite our technological advances. I understand that humanity is consciously evolving every day, and I can see the popularity of sports decreasing as time progresses. Sports, among other useless entertainment methods, are nothing more than a distraction to keep us from focusing on things that are ACTUALLY important to our society, such as the progression of mankind consciously (in terms of helping each other/treating each other as equals) and the overall status of our beautiful planet. Unfortunately, those who are in control on this realm have a different agenda, and wish to benefit nobody but themselves. Truly wolves in sheeps' clothing, and unfortunately the majority of folks are sheep being led to the slaughter. They are beginning to wake up, though, slowly but surely.

Oh dear, I have definitely been ranting, perhaps I should save some thoughts for class discussion! To wrap things up, I transfered to MTSU last semester (all the way from Maryland) as a RIM major. I am retaking this class to improve my GPA. When I previously took Philosophy two years ago I was still an immature boy who was blinded by the temptations and personal-satisfactions involved with the "college experience" which is sought by so many. The setting of my previous Philosophy class was also a huge lecture, seating well over 150 students, which really didn't help my case at all...

Now that I have grown up mentally and spiritually since then, I am extremely excited to take this course with a refreshing new outlook on life! I look forward to meeting you tomorrow.

    1. By the way, offending anyone involved with sports or any avid sports lovers is not my intention! I am merely sharing my thoughts and own opinions - I just feel that there are more important things that I could personally be focusing my life and time on these days :)

I still have plenty of friends who are huge sports addicts, and I was once one myself until maybe about 2 years ago. And I am still a big promoter of exercise and good health!

    2. This was fantastically well written, Sean! I also share your view points for the most part, but with much less conviction.

    3. Just for the sake of discussion, I'd be interested to hear the equality argument as it applies to clearly sociopathic individuals. Does a "psychotic child molester" warrant the same love and understanding as a "churchgoing mother of 3"? This medium does not allow for much subtlety, so I'd like to make it clear that I am not judging at all, I myself have been contemplating the idea lately that deep down we are actually all on basically the same level. But I stumble when considering those individuals who seem to be sociopathic, disturbed, "evil", whatever you want to call it. Do we consider those as having been corrupted along the way by something? Or do we accept the evidence of an actual physical difference in their neurochemistry that would seem to put them literally in another class of "personhood"?

      Delete
  12. Thanks for the "rant", Sean. Welcome to MTSU!

But... baseball's not a waste of time. ;)

Well ok, it is. You could also say breathing's a waste of oxygen. But it's my "waste of time" of choice. We're all entitled to one harmless irrational diversion, aren't we? Especially if it connects us to our dads and daughters and childhoods as effectively as baseball has done for me and mine.

    1. Connections are the most important thing in each of our lives, Dr.!
I will admit that I do keep up with one sports team in particular every so often... I honestly have a poor relationship with my own father, but keeping up with this specific professional football team has always given us something to agree upon, it's amazing how just one commonality can bring people together. Don't get me wrong, I am most grateful for this connection that sports has given me, haha and I didn't mean to come off so harsh! I was just sharing my TRUE feelings on the subject in my original post :P

I plan on being a judge, but you have to cross over being a lawyer first. I have a single mother and 1 older brother. We are twins regradless of what "doctors" might classify twins as. I came to MTSU for the mascot, color, soroity which I haven't pledged to, and the amazing atmosphere. I am a second year Sophomore but technaically a Freshmen due to bad choices my freshmen year. 15. Hello, Dr. Oliver!

I'm Logan Whiles. I am a Freshman majoring in Biology. I'm originally from Ohio but I moved to Tennessee when I was eight years old. I like to be outdoors, particularly in the woods or at a national park. I also get a kick out of playing music with people; I'm just a lame guitarist but something about collaborative musical effort with friends never gets old. As far as philosophy goes, I'm very much looking forward to it. The philosophy I've studied up until this point I have found very interesting. My one persistent pet peeve with the subject, however, is when people try to argue philosophy in a scientific, or fact-driven manner. I'm still under the impression that a philosopher should probably recognize all philosophies as being potentially acceptable, or none at all, as a philosophy is just created in one person's mind...so how can one philosophy be correct for everyone? Or, subsequently, how can one philosophy be falsifiable by another person? I'm looking forward to having that whole topic cleared up for me, because so far I've been really aggravated by people who think they have the means to know everything. I guess that pretty much covers it for me at this point. I'm looking forward to having my perspective broadened.

    1. I actually have a very similar attitude towards religion. How can any religion claim to be absolute? There have been hundreds of millions of people in each of the major religions over thousands of years, how can any one of them claim that all those other hundreds of millions were wrong, or even worse, cause for violence or hatred?

  17. Keaton Davis4:02 PM CST

    Hello!

I am Keaton Davis (H1), and I was born in Nashville and raised in Murfreesboro most of my life. I graduated from Siegel High School. While I live on campus at MTSU, I enjoy seeing my family on Sundays and Wednesdays at Northside Baptist, and also meeting them for dinner on occasion. I have an older sister, Kelsey, with whom I am very close - I am also good friends with her husband, Carson.

Music is a large part of my life. Some of the bands I love are The City Harmonic, NeedToBreathe, Josh Wilson, and Mumford and Sons. I play the drum set for my church orchestra and I am in the Band of Blue, in the front ensemble.

I am a Christian first and foremost, my faith in Jesus Christ being the most significant influence in my life. He is the reason we are all here on this earth, which He created. In Him I find purpose, hope, peace, joy, and most importantly, love. In answer to my call to spread His love to the world, I decided to major in History, with the hopes of earning a Law degree. This will allow me to work extensively with, among many other things, non-profit organizations that are committed to furthering the Gospel.

The Lord blessed me with the Buchanan Fellowship, so I came to MTSU. I have been able to meet incredible people who have become friends near to my heart.

I have never been in a class environment where we openly discuss and analyze our world views, so I am looking forward to exploring different ideas while testing my own. I firmly believe this will be an excellent way for me to grow my faith in the Lord and to learn more about the beliefs of others.

My name is Michele Kelley. I lived in Eagleville, TN until the 4th grade then moved "into the city" ,aka Murfreesboro. I am undeclared, but I believe that my major will be in the maths or sciences.

I absolutely love being outdoors. Hiking, camping, backpacking, and kayaking are some of my favorite activities. I am also an animal-lover. I only have dogs and cats at the moment but in the past (while I lived on a farm) I have had all kinds of animals. Even llamas!

I am a morning person, and am chronically early to everything.I also tend to listen more than speak, a trait of a middle child. I am also a musician. I play oboe in concert band and tuba in the Band of Blue. In high school I also was drum major as well. Alongside the instruments I am a vocalist, though not in the cool indie way, but more of classical training way with choral works.

I am also a christian who is involved in an on-campus ministry. I am actually going on a mission trip over spring break as an 'alternative spring break' in Washington, DC.

I am excited for what this class holds!

My name is Megan Phouthavong. I am 21 years old. I was born in Winfield, Kansas to a Laotian father and Caucasian mother, as did my younger brother. I also have two half sisters, 5 and 3 who are 100% Laotian. I grew up in Kansas and moved to Tulsa for 3 years before moving here. We relocated due to my stepfather's job as a recording engineer on Music Row. My mom works from home so it worked out well. I love Tennessee much better than Kansas anyway. =]
I am currently a Junior at MTSU. I came my freshman year, went back to Nashville State for 2 years, and am now back at MTSU majoring in Sociology and double minoring (not by choice!) in Psychology and Philosophy.
I commute two days a week because I work at the Loveless Cafe on Hwy100 in Nashville (not really Nashville, too far west, but it has the billing code of Nashville so whatever!). I am a waitress, and have done pretty much everything there since I started in January of 2010.
I have taken Biblical Studies and Intro to Ethics but never formally declared my minor until last semester, hence finally taking intro to Philosophy. I have always been interested in Philosophy in the past and hopefully this will be a way for me to further expand my knowledge on philosophers and their views.

  22. My name is Matthew Pyles, but you knew that already! I hail from the city of Seattle, and have serious PNW hometown pride that wasn’t realized until I moved here. While I also have a serious case of wanderlust—spurred primarily by a curiosity to see how other people live and think— I think that I will ultimately do what Rick Steves did and make Seattle my home.

While I, like most other people here, grew up in the church, I ultimately realized that I could not receive adequate answers to my questions—that I believed the exact same things as my parents, and their parents, and the people immediately surrounding me was immensely suspicious to me. And when I inquired about it, all I received were circular, fallacious arguments. Then, in my sophomore English class, we read Siddhartha and it just made sense. Now, I would classify myself as a secular humanist, or an atheist.

I also am a cat person, although I did dog 4H for about 4 years.

I bring this up only because I think that this journey is something that categorizes an essential part of me. I find it incredibly important to not just know that there are other viewpoints and cultures, but to understand them, and to an extent, to live them. I value a holistic understanding of the human condition. This is a large reason as to why I will be backpacking Europe this summer.

Perhaps more concrete (and useful), is to know that I am a Music Education major. My primary “instrument” is voice, which just about everyone, including myself, was surprised about since I have been playing piano (14 years) and clarinet (9 years) much longer than I had been singing chorally. This shouldn’t have been too surprising because for a good 5 years, including part of my senior year, I was dead-set on becoming a musical theater performance major!

I still plan on auditioning professionally after I graduate, both so I don’t give up on a dream I once had and regret it when I’m older, and to gain professional experience that will benefit my future students.

All that remains is to tell you that I also love reading, following current news, debating big issue ideas, cultural experiences, and swing dancing! I’m excited for this semester!

  23. What do you do, when you "do dog 4H"?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Dog 4H involves training dogs (particularly, your own, but also service dogs), learning about how to care for them (grooming, etc), and ultimately showing them in fairs and American Kennel Club events in contests ranging from judging grooming to agility matches (which my dogs was the best at!). It was fun, and had a lot of leadership opportunities.

The particular Dog 4H that I belonged to was partners witha Natural Resources 4H group, which took us on excursions like kayaking with the whales in the San Juan, XC snow skiing/backpacking, hikes, etc.

It was my "replacement" for the boy scouts, since, like you, I never made it past the cub scout phase!

    3. Ridiculously jealous over here upon reading into your future European escapades... if I actually had some monetary leverage I would be out of this country in a heart beat as well!

Awesome summer plan. I must inquire about your clarinet skills also. My roommates and I (musicians/songwriters/producers/singers) have been going nuts about the latest advancements in the Nu Swing genres. Creating our own electro swing/swing house tunes is something we would love to indulge in this semester. Are you familiar with these new sounds? I find the popularity to be pretty rampant among European nations at the moment, but the trend hasn't hit the US quite yet.

  25. Hello Dr. Oliver and my peers,
I am Timothy Springer, named after my father. But we have different middle names of course. I am from the country town of Dickson Tennessee. I am the second oldest of four children, yet the first to go to college.

This is my second semester at MTSU and I have to say I love it here. For one, I am away from the simple minded folks from my hometown. And most importantly because I am eager to learn. My major is exercise science. I plan on possibly being a nutritionist or something along those lines.

Why am I here? Honestly I was hoping this class might help me uncover this unanswered question. As far as I know, I am here to repopulate and die, hoping a slither of who I was will be remembered. But then again what do I know? Thank you and I look forward to intro to [phil]osophy.

My name is Celecita Williams and I am from Lilburn, Georgia.(40min. away from Atlanta.) I am a freshman here majoring in Concrete Industry Management, though I dont know why. I have an older brother who is also in college back home in Georgia.I am one of the few Tennessee fans from Georgia. I'm a huge sports fan,and my favorite sport would have to be Track & Field. Why am I at MTSU? I'm not completely sure and hopefully i'll figure that out soon. Why am I in Tennessee? Probably because my parents went to LMU in Tennessee and I just ended up here since I didn't want to go to a Georgia school. Why am I on earth? To someday soon be an Officer in the United States Air Force,as well as help others in need. Why am I in the world? Because God put me here, might as well stay a while. That pretty much sums up everything. Thank you and I hope this is a great semester!! -Section14

    Section 14-
    Hello all,
My full name is Skyler Sanders, but I go by Skye,I was named that because my mom is a hippy and she thought that the name was balanced; therefore she would have a balanced child (sky and sand). I was born and raised in Nashville and attended two high schools, one for science and math and the other for the arts. I am a freshmen and I came to MTSU because it was the only school that interested me. I had no interest in even considering other schools. I first thought that I would get a degree in business only because I figured that no matter what I did I would be in a business, so why not get a degree? In my first semester I took a business math class and quickly found that it wasn't for me.
I have many interests and honestly still don't know what I want to do with my life, but currently I am leaning toward getting my degree in communication disorders and after receiving my bachelors I want to continue on with my schooling and get my masters in speech pathology.
I am a musician, in love with working out and any form of exercise, an avid reader, a writer, and drive a train for little kids at Opry Mills in Nashville. I have a very full and happy life...guess that's about it. :)

    Hello All,
My name is Kathryn Ramsey, but I go by Katy. I am a sophmore majoring in English Education. I plan on teaching high school students the wonderful world of English. I was born in Arizona, but moved to Murfreesboro when I was three and have lived here ever since. I was adopted at the age of fifteen by my grandparents, who basically raised me. I am attending MTSU simply because it was the cheapest option for college, and has kept me debt free so far. I am an active member of Chi Alpha, which is a College Ministry located across from Murphy Center. I have a dog named Keiko (Key-Co) and a ferret named Izzy. I am very excited to work toward graduating early, and see what God has planned for me.

  29. Krysta Frost8:17 PM CST

    Hello, everyone!

My name is Krysta Lee Frost (or just Krysta). I'm a freshman majoring in English with a concentration in writing. People often ask me why I want to become a writer, but I can never explain why. Maybe because there is a lexical gap for the feeling of being connected with the world. Maybe because when we write, we come closer to that word—but even so, it remains elusive. What miffs me about this is also what keeps me going—the notion that I can contribute a sentence. (I suppose I should stop here before this gets out of hand.)

That aside, I'm a Filipino-American and have lived, almost equally, in both Murfreesboro and Manila. I can't choose one over the other because I consider myself part of both cultures. However, only recently have I seen—or allowed myself to see—the extent of the differences between these two worlds. I have always been a traveler, but my recent fascination with culture has only strengthened my love for traveling. I guess since I have always lived in the midst of change (I stopped counting how many schools I've attended), I long for it even more.

Perhaps moving back-and-forth between two nearly opposite time zones has forever altered my body clock; I am frequently nocturnal, infrequently without a cup of coffee or tea in my hand.

I consider myself a feminist and have, over the years, become passionate about women's and gender issues. Feminism has completely changed my perspective about the world—after all, as a feminist, you can't pick and choose your battles. I will probably minor in women's studies, as well.

I've been trying to figure out specifically what it is I believe in, because the weight society places on that question always threatens to define me. But now I know: I believe in humanity. How much more specific can you get?

I have always been interested in philosophy—I've just never had the words or the names for it. I suppose I want meaning to be constructed, destroyed, reconstructed . . . —maybe by the same force, maybe even all at once—in this class.

  30. Hello Dr. Oliver.

My name is Michael Harris (section 14) I am 19 years old, I am originally from Baltimore, Maryland. My family moved to Tennessee in 2005 in order to provide more opportunities for myself and my younger brother. I am very grateful for my family's decision to move, Tennessee is a wonderful state, full of nice people, and tons of new experiences to learn from.

Currently I am a sophomore at MTSU, and so far my experience here has been a grand one. Just in the short amount of time I've been attending college I feel like I have learned a ton, and have been exposed to many new perspectives to look at and interpret life experiences with. The major I am pursuing is a degree in Criminal Justice, with a focus in Homeland Security. With my major I plan to work for the government on the federal level, preferably for the NSA (National Security Agency) doing some sort of counter-terrorism.

The things I hope to gain from philosophy are, new perspectives on the processes of life and the way that people interpret the happenings in life.

  32. Hi All,
My name is Matt Mood, in section 14. I'm the old man in this class at 36 :) I am originally from Michigan, born and raised in Detroit but I escaped to the suburbs when I was 10. I came to Tennessee 3 years ago with my wife and 2 kids to improve our living conditions. I work full-time from home as a freelance website and application developer, so I can really live anywhere that has fast broadband. We like it here a lot better! My wife and I are both working towards degrees at MTSU.
I am a computer science major. I'm here at MTSU primarily because I have hit an income wall doing freelance work, and getting a decent position at a reputable company requires a degree.
I have always been interested in philosophy. I am by nature a very rational and logical person and the "why" has always intrigued me about everything from the way physical objects are put together to consciousness itself. I am very excited to hear and discuss everyone's views and rationales!
I was a confirmed atheist until about a year and a half ago, when I was almost killed by a sneaky tumor in my large intestine. Now I'm kind of an agnostic, I suppose. I believe that the "correct" religion for any person is what works for them and helps them the way they need to be helped.
Let's see, what else? Ah I am a cat person! I have an 8-month old cat that my kids call Stormy (she has lightning-bolt-like stripes), but I secretly call Chairman Meow.

    1. So there are at least three of us beyond the normal range of age in this class!

I must agree with you on your theistic views. Any logically minded person who refers to themselves as atheists must concede that they are truly an agnostic as we are only reasonably assured the non-existence of a deity, and if there were compelling evidence we would change out minds. Therefore, the fact that anyone who has come to atheistic views through logical means must concede that because there is the, while continually slimmer, chance that there is a deity, we are ultimately agnostic.

My fascination with technology started when I was about 7 or 8 after I got the Nintendo Gameboy after that I was hooked.

I plan to travel the world and meet as many people as possibly can. I love to visit new places and learn about different cultures. I believe that there is always something new to learn and the best way to learn is by experience and meeting new people. I want to learn as much as possibly can and that is why I am in philosophy to learn.

My names Nellie and I am from Bernardsville, New Jersey which is a small town about an hour from NYC. I am a freshmen majoring in songwriting and I came to MTSU to pursue my music career and be close to Nashville. My dream is to be a singer-songwriter living in Nashville. I sing, play guitar, and write songs which are my favorite things to do.
Besides music, I love playing lacrosse and I love to ski and just be active. I used to ski race in high school and played on my lacrosse team. I also live for spending time with family and friends, photography, beach trips, and traveling. My family is from Germany so I speak fluent German and go there every year and spend time with my family, and then also travel to other places while I'm there like Austria and Poland. My other dream is to travel the world. I believe life is too short to spend it all in one place when there's so much out there to see. Traveling is also the best teacher. This summer I am going to India! I am super stoked about that trip. Anyways, I think this is going to be my most interesting class. I've never taken a philosophy class so I can't wait to have my views broadened and hear everyones thoughts :)

  38. Hey guys. My name is Nate Tilton (H1). I'm a freshman aerospace major, and I hail from Mississippi (well, kind of). I have an awesome family, great new friends at MTSU, and an amazing Savior.

This reminds me a lot of college applications (did anyone else feel like those were like pulling teeth?), so I'll just add some things I don't usually tell people. I love dogs (I once had terrier/great dane cross. He had the size of a terrier, the spirit of a great dane, and a red beard!), I grew up on Star Wars (even Hayden Christensen can't ruin it for me), and once upon a time I performed in a piano concert (hey, I was like twelve, but that counts, right?). I hated reading so much when I was little that my parents paid me to read (soon they couldn't tear me away), I once wrote a book (minus one chapter. I couldn't bear to end it. And it was really cheesy), and I own a Central Asian tribal sword (wave it around and they'll think you know how to use it).

Philosophy interests me because it ignores nothing; it does not belittle something as too mundane or trivial to have significance (that, or I may be justifying my rambling above). Actually, Dr. Oliver, I have been thinking a lot about violence in football too. As kind of a jock, I have always enjoyed college athletics (in particular basketball, but football more as a societal thing). Perhaps I'm not at the point where I'll reject collegiate/professional football outright, but the direction of where football is heading (essentially becoming a more and more lethal human weapon) should bother me.

Well, that's it. As Obi-Wan would say, this is not the post you're looking for.

  39. Quinlan Odom10:02 PM CST

    Hi everyone!

My name is Quinlan Odom (H1) and I am a second semester freshman. I transferred to MTSU from UT Chattanooga but my family lives here in Murfreesboro. Chattanooga wasn’t horrible or anything, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. While there I did get the wonderful opportunity to share a two bed apartment with six other girls. And yes, there was only one bathroom but that’s a story for another day. This is a (short) introduction about me.

I honestly don’t know what to say about myself. Whenever asked this question I always stumble around with it. To be honest, it’s the question I dread the most when introducing myself. The question of “who am I?” How can I answer that if, maybe, I don’t even know. Then that begs the question of how do you define yourself? For me, I’ve (at least recently) believed it to be what I was going to do with my life. Considering I have no idea on that subject I refuse to let that define me.

One of the things I do, truly, believe to define me is my name: Quinlan. It’s my great grandfather’s last name (his first name was Frank and, as much as I love the idea of breaking female stereotypes, my parents didn’t want to giver their little girl a boy’s name) and my Mom wanted to honor him in some way. Thus I became Quinlan. As I have grow up I’ve discovered what that name means to me. It’s the name of my ancestors who came here from Ireland. The ancestors who, when England ruled over a non-consensual Ireland, fought back. For me, it’s a big name to live up to but each day I’m going to try my best to do just that. I guess you could say that my family is a really big deal to me.

I’m interested in Philosophy because I love sitting around with my family and my friends questioning everything. It’s been many a late night at my best friend’s house that we’ve made serious discoveries about our beliefs and the world all because we decided to question what we’ve been told our entire lives. I look forward to doing that this semester and seeing what other new things I can discover about myself and my beliefs.

  40. Hello everyone,

My name is Andrew Harris. I am a senior here at MTSU, and this is my last semester before I continue on to law school. I would like to pursue a career as a criminal defense attorney after graduation. That career is usually demonized as protecting criminals, but it is a necessary job for out society as it is the safeguard against unethical police actions.

I spent 6 years in the Army, during which my favorite duty position has been as sniper section sergeant. Although I am going to law school, I am still planning on serving in the National Guard as an infantry officer (ideally a sniper employment officer).

I've come to this philosophy with one question in mind, and it is a question that all philosophy must answer (yet seemingly does't) before anything else can be seriously considered. Do we as humans, or any animal for that matter, have true agency? The best answer I have seen goes something like "it can neither be proven nor disproven." Well, this certainly is no answer at all, simply because something cannot be disproven does not make it a valid hypothesis.

I do want to break silence to say, though, Andrew: I too have always been intrigued by the free will issue. (Ask me about how my undergrad classmate tried to resolve it.) Just read Sam Harris's little book on the subject, and was almost as infuriated by it as by his recent public statements about guns. (Speaking of sniping... I'll be interested to hear your views on our legislators' proposals to arm people like me, for YOUR protection!)

So I'm looking forward to those conversations in class, when (freely or not) I'll again cite Wm James's "first act of free will: to believe in free will."

Hi! My name is Erin Paul (H1). I grew up in Smyrna, TN, which is about 20 minutes away from campus. I still live in Smyrna in a low-income housing community called Wherry Housing. I am part of a ministry there called Community Servants. I began volunteering there my sophomore year of high school at an after school program for the kids, helping them with their homework and teaching them Bible stories. I fell in love with the people and the community and moved in a week after my high school graduation to become an intern of Community Servants. I, along with three other interns, now run the after school program, lead work days once a month to fix up the houses, lead mission teams from around the country, and do everything possible to meet the needs of the people in the community and point them to Jesus. I am extremely blessed to live and work there and I decided to go to MTSU so I could stay there throughout my four years at school. Wherry is also the reason I decided to become an education major.

I love my God and I try my best to live for Him and glorify Him in everything I do. I will be spending six weeks in Thailand this summer for a missions internship through my church. I love to travel. In addition to several places in the U.S., I have been to the Bahamas, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, Brazil, and Germany. I want to see as much of the world as I possibly can. I love people, the color yellow, pizza, flamingos, shoes, board games, the outdoors, playing soccer, and candy. I'm excited about learning new things in this class!

I have 1 brother, 3 sisters, 1 dog, and 3 cats.

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies, along with playing pretty much any games except competitive sports. Basketball and baseball were both given a try but soon lost appeal. I am currently on the fence about what i want my future profession to be. I would like to be a third generation lawyer, mainly doing something with criminal justice. I would love to be a vet though. I am taking only gen ed classes this semester to decide what i want to do.

  49. Hello my name is Eli Campbell (section 16). I was born in Cookeville, Tennessee where I was raised by both of my parents along with my one sibling, an older brother. I lived in Cookeville until i graduated last May. I came to MTSU to get the full college experience instead of staying at home and attending TTU. I have really enjoyed my time here although i have not settled on a major yet.

In high school, I loved sports and played football all four years and wrestled my senior year. I came to MTSU with a few of my friends, one of which is now my roommate. He is the reason i took this course because he took it last semester and thought it was interesting. I am a member of Greek life here on campus as a member of Sigma Nu.

Hello fellow philosophers, I am Wayne Keen sec H16 (I think); full name Steven Dwayne Keen, and this is my introduction.

I was born in Jackson, Tennessee on January the 27th, and lived in Parsons, TN until age 15, after which I moved to Lexington, TN, and there I stayed until moving on campus.

I started a short-lived business Music Magnet, which was intended to be a music-promotions company, but after only two people showed up to the first concert despite advertising in multiple newspapers and radio stations, we found ourselves too far in the hole to attempt another one. I'm also a learning musician, guitar being my primary instrument, and decent chef on top of it. I am attending for a bachelor's in Music Industry, hoping that it will help me in any further endeavors in the music business, including my dreams of becoming a rock and roll legend.

I signed up for the philosophy class to fill in my humanities, and chose over the rest because of my love of the subject. I find that oft-times pondering the state of things leads to interesting development of character, and better sense of self-understanding, and over-all well-being. I'm hoping that this class will aid me my communication skills, because I'm currently terrible at expressing my ideas in any way except for writing.

    Thus concludes my introduction.

  51. Hello, Dr. Oliver!

My name is Chloe Madigan and I am a native of Murfreesboro. Despite my initial objections to attending college in my hometown, I love MTSU. I am so thankful for the Buchanan Fellowship as it has not only offered me an ideal educational experience but an excellent group of friends.

My "plan" (and dream) in life is to become a college professor. I am majoring in English with a concentration in secondary education. I come from a long line of teachers and I love the idea of getting to share my favorite subject with future generations. I am also interested in (eventually) working for a program such as Teach Across America or City Year, both of which focus on bringing a higher standard of education to areas across the U.S. which would otherwise not have access to it.

I love to read, write, sing, cook, and volunteer. If my education fails me, my backup plan is to open my own bakery!

I look forward to our class and anticipate that our discussions will be both thought-provoking and eye-opening!

My name is Jacob Holley. I'm from Nashville but have lived in North Carolina for several years and a few other places. I'm at MTSU now simply because of its location. I plan on going to grad school out of state but I'm not sure where yet.

I'm a Psychology major, with a minor in philosophy and french. I'm hoping to go to grad school for Neurology or something along those lines.

I'm in the army reserve as a combat engineer while I attend college; my unit is near Memphis.

I'm not really sure what to expect from the class so I'm looking forward to finding out.

Im David, I'm from Chattanooga, Tn and I'm a Leisure, Sport, and Tourism major. My dream is to work in the front office of a Major League Baseball organization. I have been a die hard Atlanta Braves my entire life and hope that my love and passion for the game will push me through the times that my schoolwork becomes almost too much to handle. In addition to sports i am a huge music fan and is the reason that I originally came to MTSU.

Im in this Philosophy class because i viewed this as one of the few Gen Ed classes that could further my major. I will have to deal with many people of different creeds and beliefs and i believe an understanding of philosophy will greatly benefit me. So far i can see this being one of my favorite courses I've taken so far at MTSU.

I hope that this will continue to be a fun, interesting, and discussion based class!

I was offered a job in Nashville after I was done with the Army. I wasn't happy with what I was doing so I decided to use my G.I. Bill of rights and attend college.

I'm taking Philosophy because it is a general requirement, but it also caught my interest. I'm looking forward to learning what this class has to offer.

    2. Yes indeed, thanks to all the vets in school who have so much hard-earned practical wisdom to share. I was watching Joe Biden speak at one of the inaugural balls last night, saying how the "9/11 Generation" who'd answered the call to service had silenced critics who'd claimed they and their peers were without direction or resolve. They sure did.

And having said that, I now must add: many philosophers have questioned the meaning of "patriotism" (nationalism, love of country) and wondered if it embodies our highest human allegiance. We'll be talking about that too.

My name is Christopher Curtis (16), a second semester freshman. I was born in Nashville and shortly moved to texas for three years before moving back to Nashville. I Graduated from Nashville School of the arts where I played trombone in jazz band and euphonium in the wind ensemble. As of the moment I'm a recording industry major, but hesitant about it.

Philosophy is such an interesting thing. All it is is just old men, some sane and others not, dedicating their lives to thinking, creating these ideas, theories, outlooks on life, and even followings and going down in history. If only more people were like some of those great thinkers...

    1. "Just old men" - ?! As my old grad school roomie, a former farmer/carpenter & jokester from Indiana used to say, "I resemble that remark!" (I think he stole the line from Groucho Marx.)

But seriously: I know you intend no insult but I must point out that philosophy's definitely not just for old men anymore. Never was, really (have you heard of Hypatia?), though it's true that until fairly recently women were shut out of equal access to every profession including university teaching. The playing field is still not uniformly level, but it's been getting better. Our own dept of philosophy hired a woman last year and is about to hire another, for instance.

I enjoy a plethora of activities including reading, playing piano, civil air patrol, speech and debate, airsoft, video games and board games. I enjoy hanging out with good friends, even if it means nothing productive will occur.
I was extremely blessed to receive the Buchanan scholarship, and am enjoying not only the money, but the amazing people I have met, and the great classes I have been able to take. My major is economics, however many subjects, including philosophy, have captured my interest and I am excited to explore them with MTSU’s best faculty.
I am a Christian and have been brought up in the faith all my life; however I am interested to see other views and compare them to what I believe in order to strengthen my views. Philosophy is a way to explore these concepts that I have not had exposure to as I have grown up.

I just returned from Haiti the night before classes started, so that's somewhere I've been! It was actually the second time that I've been to Haiti. I think going for a second time made me realize how much I love to travel, especially to third world countries. I'm hoping to be able to go to the Dominican Republic over the summer with my parents and a group of people. Beside traveling, I like to cheer. I am a cheerleader here at MTSU. I'm a pretty competitive person and have been doing competitive gymnastics and cheerleading since I was six years old.

Unlike many of my fellow students, I'm not quite sure what I want to be when I grow up. I'm currently a statistics major. I've always loved math and it comes pretty naturally to me.

I am a Buchanan Scholar, so that's why I'm in this class. One of the reasons I'm at MTSU is because I received this scholarship. It has been such a blessing so far. Beside the fact that it is paying for my school (which is definitely a plus), it has introduced me to 19 of the nicest and most unique people I've ever met. I've also enjoyed the required Buchanan classes so far, and I'm sure your class will be no exception.

    WARNING: LONG POST FOLLOWS

Hello all, I'm Jon Gill (sect. 16).

I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana in February of 1993. In 2005, following Katrina, I relocated to Baton Rouge, LA, where I attended a private Southern Baptist school (read: indoctrination institution) for 5 years. Incidentally, I'm the farthest thing from a Southern Baptist as there could possibly be—I'm a non-believer and I'm proud of it.

My favorite things on this planet are making music and enjoying stand-up comedy (just study George Carlin and you'll have a great understanding of me philosophically).

In July of 2009, I officially launched my independent music production company. Since then, I've had the great fortune to be able to work as a producer as well as a photojournalist full-time to pay the bills...and that's all I could ask for, really. I am doing now exactly what I want to be able to do (admittedly, hopefully on an even larger scale) for the rest of my life.

Now on to the more interesting question—why am I here? Well, where do I start? I'll start from the most basic of "here" and work my way out (something like an inverse nesting doll).

Why am I in this class? I love thinking and learning, which is the literal essence of Philosophy in the first place.

Why am I at MTSU? 2 words: Recording Industry.

Why am I in the Nashville area? Because I'm a musician. Just makes sense that I'd be in Music City.

Why am I in Tennessee? Honestly, because of the fact that of the -MAJOR- options for music (NYC, LA, Nashville) Tennessee is the least expensive.

Why am I in America? Simple. Accident of birth.

Why am I on the Earth? Now that's the real question. I suppose we'll start at the beginning: When a mommy and a daddy love each other very much...you know how that goes. So in the physical, real sense, that's why I'm here—Because my parents decided that they wanted a second child and so here I am. Philosophically, though, the answer's more complex.

To answer this I must go outside the singular first person. I believe the real question is, "why are living beings in the universe?" We could go on for days, but I'll start my answer with one word: chaos. We are here because a series of random events originating some 13.5 billion years ago has taken place. We are the side effects of some cosmic event at the beginning of time.

We are forged from the dust of long-since-dead stars. We're here, as it were, by happy accident. Nothing is a given. We're not here for any reason other than that the universe began outward expansion nearly 14 billion years ago.

All life is made from the remnants of that event. Everything that we see, everything we've ever known as truth, exists in a symbiotic nature with every other imaginable thing in the universe. We are the universe, and the universe is in us. We are each other, and as such, our duties are ultimately to love one another unconditionally as we'd love ourselves. We're all we've got. Why are we here? Who knows? Who cares? But, since we're here, let's make the best of it!

Yours in Peace, Love, and Music,

    Jon

Of course I know that routine, it's akin to "seven dirty words" in terms of his most famous works. The funniest thing, in my mind, that Carlin ever said was in an interview with Jon Stewart in the 90s: "I believe that when you're born into this world, you're given a ticket to the freak show. If you're born in America you get a front row seat.”

I love being outdoors and doing anything that connects me to nature. While in Charleston I did a lot of kayaking and also took up the sport of Kite Boarding. for those of you who have never done it, I defiantly recommend it.. biggest rush of your life!

Currently I work as a vet tech and bartend a bit. My husband Will is from Murfreesboro and we have been married for 3 years. We met while both working a summer at Dollywood... it is a magical place. We have a dog and a cat. We are learning spanish. I was very sick for quite a bit of my life and it has given me a lasting perspective. MTSU is my second try at college and I am majoring in Anthropology. I hope to make a positive contribution to the world during my lifetime.

My name is Caitlin Rose Bryer, (Sec 16), I'm originally from a small town near the northern tip of Indiana. My family moved to Nashville to further my father's musical career, mostly blues guitar.

Lived in Nashville, learned about life passing time in the city and developed an interest in the arts and academics.

I hope to give back as much as I've learned thus far during this lovely stride through life. I take each morning as a beautiful thing despite the hardships, I believe strongly in the nature of endless contemplation to the point of nothingness so apparent, it's forgotten. Luckily, I'm paying attention this time.

Best of luck and peaceful blessings always, Rose.

  82. My name is Evan Best. I was born in Evansville, Indiana and moved to Tennessee in 1997 for my dad's job. I attended Cumberland University for Freshman year studying biology. I then decided to transfer to MTSU and changed majors to Recording Industry.

I am currently working at O'Charley's on Old Fort Pkwy. The one by Sam's Club, not the shady one on Memorial. I thoroughly enjoy it because I constantly get to work with my hands and interact with all different kinds of people. If you ever want to dine out, come to O'Charley's and ask for Evan.

I took this class to help me think in a more broader sense of the world instead of being so narrow-minded. I'm not too sure how well I'll do in this course because I am a very literal person when it comes to how things are and should be.

  85. My name is Alex Tate (sec 9). I am a sophomore majoring in biology with a concentration in ecology. Like most people I am in this class to satisfy a gen ed. credit. Despite that I do have some interests in philosophy. Philosophically I believe I am here to do something big within the field of biology.

Hi! My name is Pola (section 9) and I'm a sophomore studying social work. Don't ask me why I'm doing social work and don't tell me the pay is non-exsistant. Because I am fully aware of that. I'm currently taking intro to philosophy because it's a general education and it seemed nice to take to get closer to my goal of becoming a social worker. I am currently living with my friends in their apartment with their adorable cat Pizza. So you should choose me to be in a group with because I have a cat. And my friends are cool. And I'm cool. I'd like to think I'm pretty good at making displays and projects, but as far as presenting them goes, I'm not the best. I get work done though, especially in groups. So choose me.
