Section 13 Group 1 - Hegel

Hello Group 1,
I hope you all had a good weekend.  During last class we discussed Rousseau's view on freedom and his explanation of General Will.  I believe it was clear that our opinion as a group was that this General Will understanding is not something that we would be likely to follow in this time.  He may be a good fit for a cult like leader.
Moving forward; We now jump into Hegel.  It would be great if he was less confusing but that is just not the case with this Philosopher.  My take was that he see's reality as actual and combines philosophical views with history.  Better explained may be that reality as it relates to history is relative only by when it unfolds for us to observe.  This is the best understanding that I have.  I also think that the reason it is difficult to understand this philosopher is because the way he chooses to explain or express his views are complex.
My opinion is anyone can make their views complex and greater that what they are.  Its when we simplify, clarify and effectivly got our view accross that a good philosopher should be recognized other than for the view itself.

Thoughts???

  1. I'll definitely agree, Michael, that Hegel is unbelievably confusing. I'll also agree that, in my opinion, the more concise and (seemingly) straight-forward a philosopher, the more we should study and understand his ideas. I find it interesting how Hegel, a believer in God, dismisses the idea of life and history having a set "goal", i.e. the second coming of Christ. Instead, Hegel argues that we cannot understand history in its full being until it is completely unfolded. This philosopher said that the goal of life and history is to understand them both, respectively.

  2. I feel that alot of his peers and later philosophers disagreed with Hegel because he didn't blindly follow something without fully understanding it. His theory about becoming fully aware of the spirit seems very interesting to me because a lot of Christians think that they have to get to Heaven in order to be with God when God is already in us through our spirit. He points out that since we are more than just flesh, we should try to realize what our spirits' purpose is.

I find that Hegel didn't interest me in the slightest. Maybe it's because I didn't get a full grasp of his philosophy presented in the Chapter, but in general I just didn't think he was right.

    Factual Question:
    Definitions:
    An idea __________ (thesis)
It’s opposing idea or contradiction ____________ (antithesis)
A new idea formed from the conflict ___________ (synthesis)

Discussion Question: At what point does language defeat the purpose of communication? If the goal is to enlighten and educate, then what good does it do to complicate a topic beyond the point of understanding?
