Midterm group reports

If you've not yet identified a topic & text to use for your report, do so ASAP. (Click on "comments" below to indicate your preference. Be sure to include your section #, 3 or 8)

If you see that someone else is working on a topic you're interested in but doesn't yet have two partners, ask if they'd be interested in working with you. We'll finalize the report roster & sequence on Tuesday.

I'll give a bonus run to the group that volunteers to go first, next Thursday (Feb 8).

Reports will take the form of 15-minute presentations, plus discussion (be sure to give us at least a couple of discussion questions) and a quiz over your presentation (and over any material you'd like to assign for us to read in advance). Be relevant, interesting, and provocative. Have fun.

Groups, post 10+ pages of relevant text OR a link thereto, AND a 6+ question quiz on your report, at least a day prior to your designated reporting date; see "Step By Step Instructions to Embed a PDF On Blogger" below.

  1. • Should philosophers be deliberately enigmatic and impenetrable? Can an obscure epigrammatic statement be profound? Or should philosophers always strive for clarity? Do you find Heraclitus "tantalizing" or "annoying"?
-A clear answer isn't always the best answer.

    • What do you think Heraclitus meant when he said you can't step into the same river twice?
-The river is in constant change, so stepping into the same EXACT river twice is impossible as it will have changed ever so slightly by the time you set your foot into the water. And just like the river, the world is in constant change.

    • Do you expect your friends to be themselves and not change? Or do you encourage them to become themselves by changing?
-I believe that change can mean a negative or positive outcome. I prefer to think of the term GROW. I believe every person should strive to grow. (in a positive manner)

    • An old pop song proclaimed "I hope I die before I get old." (Some of the band members did, in fact.) The alternative to growing old, of course, is dying young. Will you embrace aging and the changes in lifestyle and physical capacity it represents, or resist it?
-It depends on what those changes are. If I personally view them as positive then I shall embrace them.

    • Heraclitus was both introspective and empiricistic, valuing both the "inner stage" (45) and the evidence of the senses. Are you more introspective, more curious about the world around you, or both?
-I believe it is important to maintain both views as the world is'nt black and white.

    • What do you think of the SoL's "problem with our phones"? Do they create a crisis of meaning, does tech generally pose an "existential threat" to life as we've known it? Or is this just more change we need to embrace and manage?
-Not all change is bad, and not all change is good. With the introduction of more technology we as a society are faced with many problems. Technology is a distraction from the real world, but also a tool.

  2. #3 Group report by Mary Sadek, Bola Attaalla - There is A God
    A quiz questions,
    1. Why did Antony Flew felt compelled to abandon his atheism and embrace theism?
    2. Is it by chance that life exists on earth or is it a work of God?
    3. Did the universe know we were coming?
    4. What is the possibity for life to exist on earth?
    5. How can a universe of mindless matter produce beings with intrinisic ends, self-replication capabilities, and coded chemistry?
    6. According to Antony Flew, how did matter become living matter that can reproduce?
