Introductions

On our first day we'll begin to introduce ourselves and discuss these questions:

  • Do you consider yourself “philosophical”?
  • What do you understand “philosophy” to mean?
  • Do you have a favorite philosopher?
  • How would you summarize your personal philosophy?

Everyone should then post their own introductions to the course blogsite and read others’posts before our second class meeting. But feel free to go ahead and post your thoughts in the comments space here, whenever you wish.

Dr. Oliver

Hello, everyone. My name is Joshua Blair. I'm from Memphis, TN and I'm a Junior & Electronic Media Journalism major. I love music and love producing music with my free time. My favorite musician is Bob Marley. My favorite filmmakers consist of Stephen King, Spike Lee, John Carpenter, Quentin Tarantino, and others. I also like to write with my free time. I love art and its different forms. I love learning new things and meeting new people and hearing their stories. I wouldn't consider myself philosophical, but I'm sure this class will change that. Philosophy, in my opinion, is a system of principles formed from a study of ideas and/or topics. I don't have a favorite philosopher, but I have a slew of personal philosophies and my favorite is: Before you can establish yourself as anything, you have to establish yourself as an individual. If you don't, you'll just be apart of the shadow of people wandering trying to search for who they are and their purpose.

My name is Sara Anderson and I am from Middle,TN. I am a sophomore in college and major in animal science. I just transfered from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. I want to go on to Veterinary school after I finish undergrad. My favorite artist is John Mayer and I love chocolate. I would not technically consider myself philosophical but I do think we all contribute to the ideas within Philosophy. I believe Philosophy is the study of ideas and the knowledge behind ideas. I do not have a favorite philosopher because honestly philosophy kind of blows my mind with the higher thought of thinking so I try to avoid philosophers. If I had to form a personal philosophy it would be that independence and confidence is the key to success.

Greetings, everyone. I am Michael Sharber, a third-year who has lived in Murfreesboro his entire life. My major is English, my minors Japanese and Linguistics, as I aspire to be an English teacher to Japanese students. It is very hard work with very stiff competition, but even if I am unable to achieve my ultimate dream, I do have a backup: being a Japanese teacher to American students.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, drawing, and writing my currently third romance novel. I also pride myself on being a gentleman.
But enough about me. To answer the questions...
I consider myself, as well as every human on the planet, philosophical. This is because we all have our own morals and ethics, our personal philosophies, no one the exact same as another. Everything is a matter of perception. If I say the sun is purple and the sky is lime green, then it is. Maybe not to anyone else, but it is to me. Philosophy, more or less, is how we see the world differently than others. When we look at the horizon, do we first see the sky or the ground? The clouds above us or the grass beneath our feet? What comes to us first is our perception of the world around us.
My favorite philosopher is one of the classic three: Socrates. His humbleness inspires me. If I remember right, he said that no matter how astute a person was, the ones perceived smartest by society's standards were on equal intelligence with those perceived not so, since the wisest were not wise at all. Thus, everyone has potential. I like positive messages.
To summarize my personal philosophy, if you're nice to me, I'll be nice to you.
With that in mind, please excuse my rambling. As a writer, I do tend to, er... like writing.

  9. My name is Shelby Smith and I'm from Mount Juliet TN. I am a sophomore majoring in Social Work with a minor in Psychology. I hope to one day work with abused children/children with behavioral &/or emotional problems. I consider myself philosophical by nature. I am very curious about human nature and the ways in which people's thinking processes contribute to societal and global problems. To me philosophy is simply the pursuit of wisdom and understanding of reality. I do not have a favorite philosopher, i have many that interest me but none that i can call my personal favorite. Maybe that will change by the end of this semester. To put it briefly, my personal philosophy would be to treat all human beings as equal with love and compassion and to think critically while still remaining open to new ideas.

  17. Michelle Lee7:20 PM CDT

My name is Michelle Lee, I'm originally from Miami Beach, FL and moved to Milan, TN when I was a freshman in High School. This is my first year at MTSU and the first time I've been out on my own. I am currently majoring in Psychology, but my real passion is filmmaking. I love the language of film, I love how a person can tell a story through visuals. I've been watching and studying movies since I can remember. I always knew that I wanted to be a part of that world and i hope I'll make it there. I've seen thousands of films in countless genres, but my personal favorites are the classics: Gone With The Wind, Some Like It Hot, A Streetcar Named Desire, West Side Story being only a few. I have other interests as well, I love all forms of art (music, painting, drawing, etc.) and I love learning, as nerdy as that is to say. I don't think of myself as a philosophical person. There is no set definition of the word 'philosophy' and the meaning of that word varies from person to person. I think it has to do with how we as individuals see the word and life. It's also about asking the hard questions that don't necessarily have a right or wrong answer. Philosophy is all based on perception, I think. I live by morals and ethics just as any person does. I was baptized as a catholic and brought up in a family that had a major 'culture clash', with my mother's side being hispanic and my father's side being, well, white. My mom and dad always taught me to be open to new ideas and new experiences, to never be closed minded and to never be ashamed of who I am and where I come from. "You're here and there will only be one of you. So embrace it," that's what my mother told me. My parents wanted me to look at things from different perspectives and be independent. I don't have a favorite philosopher because I don't know much about philosophy to begin with. However there is on phrase I go by, "All I know is that I know nothing." Which is why i'm taking you class. Haha

I have a history in finance, and I'm getting educated in law so that I can use them as my platform when I make a run in politics. I consider myself to be philosophical because I enjoy resolving complicated issues without violence. I believe philosophy is dealing with problems with logic and knowledge. I don't have a favorite philosopher. My personal philosophy is deal with small issues before they become larger issues regardless of how much effort it takes to fix it.

I'm a transfer student, studying Electronic Media Production. I do consider myself philosophical. Simply because I believe anyone with a conscious understanding of their own opinions, and an open mind to the oppositions of those opinions, has the basic tools for whats to be a "philosopher".
Philosophy is one of those practices that conditions the mind to think beyond its conventional source of learning and adapting to new situations. It creates an entirely new realm, in which the mind has more range to operate, while connecting the dots and unlocking the secrets of the universe.
If I'm forced to choose a philosopher it would be Confucius. (legendary)
My personal philosophy is simple: live, and let live.

  24. Arielle Roides (1030-013)9:21 PM CDT

Hi everybody! My name is Arielle Roides. I am from Rochester, New York and have been here in Tennessee for a little over one year now. I love it here! I study Business Administration and Marketing and I minor in Psychology. I was originally a psychology major, but realized it was something I was truly interested in, but I decided against pursuing a psychology career path. I would say I am quite a philosopher. Philosophy literally means, "love of wisdom." I love learning new things and learning from others and growing from the differing perspectives I encounter. Studying different ideas and why humans do the things they do, as well as thinking about our innermost beings truly fascinates me. To me, studying philosophy is an attempt to understand life, living, and all of its components. It is an attempt to comprehend why humans do the things they do and how all has come to being. It is attempting to answer the "Who's, What's, Where's, When's, and most importantly, Why's" of life. I believe philosophy is more so a way of life, than a science. Honestly, I do not remember much about the great philosophers, but I do look forward to refreshing my memory. I do like Plato, for his setting men and women equal. I like how Plato says, "Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly." He also practiced the golden rule. I would say I have developed a deeper understanding of life and purpose within the past couple of years. I have established in my mind several different philosophies, which combined dictate the way in which I live my life. I believe that good will always triumph evil. I believe that everyone has a purpose that they need to search for. I love deep thought about life and that meaningful feeling of accomplishment. I believe that humans are continually growing and learning through experience and circumstance. I look forward to taking this class this semester and further broadening my view of philosophy.

Hello everyone! My name is Journey Button-Hale (section 14). I am a second semester freshman at MTSU. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge and understanding of philosophy this semester. Philosophy is interests me because it applies to everyone. I believe all humans are philosophical. We all ponder existence, reality, and self-knowledge. Socrates is my favorite philosopher because he was smart enough to understand his own ignorance, something we seem to overlook in our everyday lives.

I'm on MTSU's equestrian team as well as the horse judging team and currently am assigned to major in horse science, although that is very subject to change seeing as I have no idea what I want to do with this life of mine yet. I instantly fall in love with pretty much every animal I meet. I love to hike and sketch and play piano and ride horses and I'm usually up for most adventures. I don't know a whole lot about philosophy but I tend to think too much, so I suspect I'll get along with it pretty well.

Since then I haven't spent much time looking for the meaning behind things. Instead I look to do what I can with what I have and make the most of it. As can be expected, I am a bit of a nerd and when I'm not working on school stuff I spend a great deal of time at the barn with my horses. I think that philosophy is too broad and abstract to be limited to a simple concrete definition. I don't really consider myself a philosopher, although I can be a "deep thinker" when needed. 45. Haley Weathers Tuesday/Thursday 11:20 class3:17 PM CDT

Hello, my name is Haley Weathers. I live in Mount Juliet and commute to MTSU every Tuesday/Thursday. I moved to MJ from Mobile, Alabama when I was very young. I recently changed from a journalism major to a nursing major. I know-- it's a big difference between the two. I would just much rather do free writing on the side rather than be constrained by the news. Anyway, I would consider myself philosophical in my own way. I'm not sure what the textbook definition of philosophy is, but to me, it is looking deeper into what is placed right in front of you. It is letting go of what society tells you and diving deeper into what that little voice in the back of your mind is whispering. I think that to some people, philosophy can be a scary thing; it can broaden your understanding of the world while producing an array of new questions at the same time. With that being said, I am not sure who my favorite philosopher is. I've learned about a few but not enough to pick a favorite, so I am very excited to learn. I guess my own personal philosophy is that no one has ever "walked in someone else's shoes". Therefore, it is impossible to give anyone in the world a true judegment. Everyone has their own unique chemical make-up, thoughts, circumstances, etc that influence their actions. No two people are identical so no one ever truly knows how one would react in someone else's circumstance. Hence, we should work on understanding rather than judging.

  47. Good day to you all.
I am posting this again since the first one didn't stick using my mobile device.

This Michael Lucas originates from Rancho Cucamonga, Southern California. I can admit that philosophy is not my major of study however like my view on the meaning I have a rational opinion on topics as they relate to either myself or when asked of another. My understanding to the meaning is shy of extensive and not much more than a well thought out opinion from someone who has a concern or interest on a particular topic. Though I don't have a philosopher that I take too I have come up with a quote that I keep top of mind when I believe it applies.

"Theory, though a thought in itself is like a dollar seen on the ground. We see value in its existence however unless put to use or otherwise applied will be of waste."

Personally I understand the need for those who give there well rationalized opinions on shoulda's, coulda's, do's and dont's but I believe that if no action comes from the thought we don't move forward.

Through the implementation of cross-functional, transparent and well diversified organizational thought innovation becomes reality.

  49. Hey, my name is Caitlyn Osborne. I am a freshman currently double majoring in English and Psychology. I love to write creatively. Soccer and ultimate frisbee are my favorite sports; Switchfoot is my favorite band, but I enjoy a wide variety of music. I am not a very outgoing person, but once I get comfortable, I love to hear peoples' stories. I love being outside; summer is my favorite season with fall as a close second. I love to travel, and I hope to see much of the world before I die. My voice tone is naturally sarcastic, and I am sarcastic a lot; I pretty much never mean it rudely. I have a lot of ambitions and ideas about what I want to do with my life; I want to leave the world knowing I have made a positive difference.
I don't have a favorite philosopher, and I have never considered myself one. If philosophy is indeed thinking deeply about commonly accepted ideas, I have done so. I feel like a lot of things we commonly accept are often skewed.
I suppose my personal general philosophy is the Christian philosophy to love God and love people (actions >words). I have a lot of other opinions and philosophies pertaining to other issues. I'm sure some of those will come up in class.

Greetings everyone, I am Landy Tate, a freshman, from Memphis,Tennessee. My current major is that of Public Relations. A couple of activities that occupy most of my time are reading and writing. Two types of foods that I really enjoy eating are Italian and Chinese. A fun fact about myself is that this past weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting the author of this year's selected novel ,A Pearl in the Storm, Tori Murden McClure. And I must say, the speech she gave at convocation was so empowering!
-------I believe philosophy to mean the way an individual thinks, which in turn dictates how one will act or lead his/her life. I have never thought about coining any philosopher thus far as one of my favorites, but I am familiar with a couple of the greats like Plato and of course Socrates. Sometimes I do consider myself philosophical because I do have certain sayings and morals that I base how I live my life around;however, I have not quite developed any personal philosophies. Possibly after a few more world experiences, I will be able to create original philosophies of my own.

This is Ashley Eppert from Clare, MI. I am a freshman and am in Cophilosophy sec 14. I would not consider myself very philosophical simply because I don't know too much about philosophy. That being said, I also do not have a favorite philosopher. I know all of that is going to change based on our first meeting. I'm excited to think about things from a different perspective and to analyze things more thoroughly. My favorite things are: Icecream, beer, mornings, coffee, driving, and my mom.

  53. Markethia McDonald Sec. 135:22 PM CDT

My name is Markethia McDonald, and I am a third semester freshman (second year at MT, first year as a full-time student.) I am from Atlanta Georgia born and raised and this past summer I became an official Tennessee resident. I major in Industrial and organizational psychology, and I plan to minor in business administration or management. My hobbies include shopping, eating, hanging out and being an overall Princess :) I am in love with Big Sean, Transformers, Camaros.
My personal philosophy would have to be derived from my faith in God. All questions such as why do I exist and my purpose in life can be answered from my Bible. I was put on this earth to serve God and contribute my talents to the world around me. My faith is responsible for my morals and standards.

  54. Nikki Sinning7:29 PM CDT

Hi everyone! My name is Nikki Sinning. (Section 14) I'm from Memphis, Tennessee. I'm a sophomore and my major is Organizational Communications. Some of my favorite things include soccer, the beach, and great music, books, and movies. I am a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority (Go Greek!). I don't really know much about philosophy or any philosophers so I'm definitely looking forward to learning more through this course. Without knowing much about philosophy I guess I would consider my own personal philosophy to be based on my faith in God and I set my standards and morals accordingly and try to live up to those as best as I can.

  55. Allison Griffin (13)7:42 PM CDT

Hello Everyone! I'm Allison Griffin (section 13) I'm a junior at MTSU and I am studying social work. I live in Hendersonville, TN and commute to campus on tues/thurs. I enjoy traveling and experiencing new places, hiking, and my favorite food is a tie between sushi and thai cuisine. A fun fact about myself would be... I have broken 8 bones and I have had 5 concussions... I would assume this hasn't happened to many other people, at least I hope not for their sake. On the question of what do I believe what philosophy is? I am honestly not sure, I just finished listening to the first podcast and may be even more unsure. I am hoping to gain a better understanding from this class by asking questions and also hearing others.

Hello, My name is Ashley Delancey I'am a Mother of two, this is my first semester at MTSU. I'am here to finish my Criminal Justice Degree and look forward to finding my place in the field. I can't say that I'am very philosophical on the other hand my family and friends my argue differently. My Father would say that I have a way of seeing things differently and would formulate my own opinion on what philosophy should be. Philosophy to me is a greater view on difficult subjects that know one seems to have a definite collective answer for. If I had to say I had a favorite Philosopher it would be George Matthew Adams for now. I'am sure that may change."We cannot waste time. We can only waste ourselves." (George Matthew Adams)

Hello, my name is Shawandra Jenkins. I am a sophmore and a transfer from Western Kentucky University. Philosophy to me is basically based around logical thinking and trying to grasp the meaning of things in a different perspective. I do not have a favorite Philosopher. My personal Philosophy is just to live and see things from different views instead of sticking to the same things. Life changes overtime. You can't be stuck in what you're used to, you have to explore the world for what it is worth.

  61. Trevor Broaddus12:01 AM CDT

My name is Trevor Broaddus. I am 20 and am a junior majoring in computer science with a math minor. I was born and raised in California for the first 13 years of my life and moved around a lot after that, ending up here in TN about 5 or so years ago. I miss California and have hopes of moving there when the time is right.
Currently the only "understanding" of philosophy i have a handful of quotes from your typical, well-known philosophers. I believe philosophy is seeking a greater knowledge of things most just accept and go along with because that is the "norm". I do not have a favorite philosopher. My personal philosophy is "to each his own".

Hey everyone! I'm Katie, I'm from Pennsylvania, and I just transferred this year to MTSU! I'm a recording industry major, and I'd like to do concert promotion in the future! I love the Pittsburgh Steelers, sushi, and going to concerts with my friends. I don't have a favorite philosopher, but my personal philosophy is to not let the "what ifs" hold you back from doing anything. Dream as big as you can.

  63. Amanda Gargano (13)12:36 AM CDT

Hi:). My name is Amanda Gargano and I grew up in Nolensville, Tn. I am majoring in Psychology in hopes of becoming a psychiatrist. Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead are two of my favorite bands but I love all different types of music. If I was stranded on a deserted island I would have no problem survivng off of macaroni and cheese, doughnuts, and cinnamon toast crunch with soy milk. Am I a philisophical person? I believe that I become more philisophical and enlightened everyday that I am able to make a deep and meaningful connection within myself. Philosophy to my understanding means intermost ideas, values, truths and feelings that come from within to help one live a happy and peaceful life. I can honestly say that I am not quite sure what even makes someone a philospher. I believe that we all have the potential to be as enlightened as philosphers such as Socrates, and Plato despite the fact we may not become acknowledged for it. My personal philosphy is ever changing and improving but for now it is "Don’t let the influences of the world choose who you are. Peace will only reside within yourself."

  64. Garrett Milich (sec. 14)3:43 AM CDT

My name is Garrett Milich and I hail from Purcellville, Virginia. I am a first-time freshman pursuing the Recording Industry major in Audio Production. I am pithy, critical, and observant, thus my affinity for music and sound. I am an active stage performer and technician.

To summarize my personal philosophy I feel I must relate the following. When asked, "What do you think is the secret to a successful life?" -- "Trust in yourself; always be willing and excited to learn; seek personal balance." I wouldn't go so far as to label that a secret, nor suggest the pretense of knowing what a successful life entails (for anyone). Only, this is what I strive for. That said, I am fond of this quote: "It is only a poor sort of happiness that could ever come by caring very much about our own pleasures. We can only have the highest happiness such as goes along with being a great man, by having wide thoughts and much feeling for the rest of the world as well as ourselves." - George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans)

I do consider myself "philosophical" for I attempt to trace the nature of knowledge and existence, to understand my personal reality and that of the collective. "Philosophy" is but the study of that just mentioned. I do not have a favorite philosopher. For that, I look forward to this course.

  65. Brendon Holloway (014)8:55 AM CDT

Hey everyone! My name is Brendon and I grew up in Church Hill, Tennessee, which is in the very Northeast part of Tennessee. I am a sophomore who is undeclared but geared toward law school. I have a strong passion for music and performance in general.

As for my personal philosophy, I always find myself using the words "always be yourself." No matter what in life, I feel that as long as you are being yourself and doing what you want, you will be successful and happy. Another philosophy I have is "you are not a tree; if you are not happy, you can move and change."

I understand what philosophy is, but I cannot say that I have a favorite philosopher, just favorite quotes by philosophers.

I am currently working at LifeWay Christian Bookstore and Old Navy. I also have my license to sell life insurance with my parents' financial business.

I have never really thought about much about philosophy until now, so I don't really know much about it. I have always thought philosophy to be studying something and gaining more knowledge about it. I don't have a favorite philosopher, but I am excited to learn more about philosophy so I can adequately pick one!

    Do you consider yourself “philosophical”?
Yes, i also like to think i know French

What do you understand “philosophy” to mean?
    the study of deep thoughts?

Do you have a favorite philosopher?
Nah, well maybe... I can't think of anyone t the moment.

How would you summarize your personal philosophy?
My personal philosophy is broken. At this point, I'm not sure it was ever really there. My philosophies have a way of messing with my head too much.
What I am practicing now is Choosing your happiness. Basically- trying to stop sadness...it's going.

I am what I am. I'm an outgoing individual that just wants to make people happy and wants to love people. What's wrong with that? I'm a dancer. Jazz, tap, hiphop, ballet, & pole (not a stripper, just a dancer.) I'm young money (deuces) hahaha. i've lived in Hendersonville, Tennessee for all of my almost twenty years of life in the same house, until college of course. I'm really bad at these introduce yourself stuff. Honestly, there's not a good way for me to put myself. I'm controversial, a nut job, and I don't even know myself half the time. Get to know me.

Hello, my name is Roberto Kohler(14). I'm seventeen years of age. I am RIM major with a minor in public relations. I consider myself decently philosophical to the extent that i understand that not everything needs extensive evaluation. Barely anything does. I suppose I understand philosophy as the fundamental principles that one chooses to look at life, which makes me believe that everyone's philosophy is different. I'd summarize my philosophy as one that was focused on the current. You'll never have a bad past nor future if you make sure your present is always exceptionally good.

  70. Isaiah Cornelius12:41 PM CDT

Hello, my name is Isaiah Cornelius(14). I'm a psychology major and I'm currently a freshman. It was actually my interest in psychology which got me into philosophy. I argue that philosophizing is essential to understanding psychology, because the brain is indeed the mind. Some of my favorite philosophers include Plato, Alan Watts, and Rene Descartes. In terms of philosophical perspective I consider metaphysics and moral philosophy to be a major part of my personal philosophy and interest. I love listening to all types of music, and meeting new people. As for my personal philosophy on life,I believe that everyone should live their lives in a way so that they exist through the ideas that they represent and believe in.

  71. Hello. My name is Matthew Zumwalt (13). I'm a senior English major. I have always been interested in philosophy, and I have read many philosophical works on my own time. However, I have never had the chance to study philosophy in a classroom setting. Some of my favorite philosophers are Sam Harris, Immanuel Kant, Albert Camus, and Friedrich Nietzsche. If I were to define my personal philosophy, I would say it most closely resembles secular humanism.
