Group 4 What is philosophy?

We started off the group by introducing ourselves using the information written on the index cards. We then turned the conversation to the question, "What is philosophy?" For a minute or two we all sat there in silence, staring at each other awkwardly, because no one could come up with an answer. We discussed the fact that even the philosophers in the podcast had trouble answering what seems like such a simple question . As we got a little more comfortable with each other we started talking about what we thought our own philosophies are, and again, it was difficult to come up with an answer; none of us had really thought about it before. We decided to answer a simpler question: what are some commonly accepted philosophies? The answers came a little more quickly. The Golden Rule, is your glass half full or half empty, and so on. We decided to think more on our own about our own personal philosophies for the next discussion.

  1. Do you know Sally Brown's favorite philosophy? It's just "No!" Another of hers was: "Why are you asking me?" Slogans are no substitute for a personal philosophy but they're a start.

When starting to look at the questions: "What is Philosophy?", as Ali mentioned in her post, it was very difficult to come up with an exact answer..Personally, i think that this is the case because Philosophy is a wide range of things that go into how a person percieves life. Furthermore, i also believe that everyone's own philosophy is unique to themselves. This is why when you ask a group of people "What is Philosophy?", it is much harder to answer than if you were asked directly. Hope to see everybody in class on Wed. Have a good day!

  3. I think our group was very successful at determining that their is no one true answer to the question, "what is philosophy?"

I am confused as to what podcast we are to watch before class on Wed. I have been looking for some kind of order or something to that extent, but i have exhausted all of my resources to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated! if someone could get back to me by posting here or emailing me that would be fantastic! (adi2c@mtmail.mtsu.edu)

I think philosophy is what you make it. Whether its good or pure ignorance, its something that you live and apply to your daily life and attempt to persuade to others to see your viewpoint of your philosophy. Philosophy is also the study of various subjects, whichever your choice maybe, and how we as people approach that subject through emotions and thoughts that we build from our point of view. As you can see, there is no default definition of "What is philosophy". Philosophy is determine by what we make of it.
