Within my final blog post, I plan
to discuss Bob Ross and how he relates to Stoic ideology. Though Bob Ross has
never outright stated that he is a Stoic, a lot of the factors in his life and
his show The Joys of Painting have
pointed towards that of Stoicism. In order to prove this, I will be looking at
his life before painting, some of his most Stoic quotes and his painting style
or, in other words, the way he chooses to view painting and presents it to other
people.
If anyone else has anything else I should discuss about him, let me know!

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a good topic. When I searched the definition for Stoicism, it basically said using self control and fortitude to overcome emotions that could be destructive. Did he have a past that could lead to destructive emotions? Elaborating on that would be interesting to read and how his painting helps him deal with his emotions.
Stoics also tend to believe that most events in the world are beyond their control. They're determinists, contending that the only thing definitely subject to our will is our inner attitude. Is anything in Bob Ross's approach to art & life stoical in that sense? In general, is artistic creativity stoical? Or is there a presumption of freedom implicit in all artistry?
