Religious Skepticism

SUMMARY:

Our presentation regarding religious skepticism was referencing the beginnings of skepticism as well as the ideas of why would consider ourselves skeptics. Each of us mentioned different ways and ideas of what skepticism is in regards to religion. We mentioned Xenophanes who many deemed as the precursor to religious skepticism. He often talked about the idea of one god being the highest god among all. He perceived humans to not be worthy enough of having god be a mortal being. Xenophanes mentioned that he believed God was an existential being because he was too powerful to be a physical entity. We also mentioned the philosopher Michael Brant Shermer. Shermer deemed himself as a Christian during his youth but later on grew to be an atheist because of his lack of belief in God.
  • Would you consider yourself to be a skeptic even if you have a certain religious belief?
  • Why do you believe Ishavardas considered his dog to be a god?
  • Do you think God should be considered an existential being like Xenophanes does or do you believe there is a possibility that God could be mortal?
  • If you don't believe in any religious being, what do you think drives your faith in everyday occurrences?
