Theses Two "This word cannot be understood as referring to the sacrament of penance, that is, confession and satisfaction, as administered by the clergy."
Thoughts- Only God can give salvation-- Not a priest
Thesis Seventeen------------------------------------------------------------ "It seems as though for the souls in purgatory fear should necessarily decrease
Thoughts- Do not feat God but rather love him and you will be less likely to sin. True salvation is not achieved by having the mindset of fearing God.
Summary:
The 95 theses was a dramatic approach to show that the selling of indulgences to renovate St.Peter's is wrong. A major point that Luther wanted to express was
that the Pope has nothing to do with purgatory or the forgiveness of your sins.
Another major point Luther wanted to make was that you can never reach salvation
By buying indulgences. Indulgences give a false sense of security, and that no real
Christian will buy an indulgence to repent but rather they would seek repentance from God.

The practice of posting such a document in public space in order to provoke discussion would be welcome in our day, but I fear the ubiquity of social media has so distracted us that we'd barely notice, if a Luther posted 95 Theses somewhere today. SAD!
ReplyDelete2. The Pope's forgiveness at this time may have been what was viewed as what was most important, but today (at least in my experience) forgiveness is between a person and God.
