This I Believe Final Blog Post

This post is my own essay over “This I believe”...

I believe that practicing to be an open minded person is the purpose of life. Being able to listen to others, even if you don’t agree with them allows you to gain knowledge and grow as a person. I say this because listening to someone even when you don’t agree with them can be a challenge. As humans we try to stick with our comfort, but if we go out of our way to try and understand others, the comfort will expand. We are surrounded by so many different people, and we all have a different way of
living. My goal in life is to be able to have an understanding of many people and their experience since that’s what molds our opinions and beliefs. I often find myself wanting to learn about other cultures even if I in no way am connected to them. I hope as I grow older I get to learn to practice a more open minded lifestyle. Wisdom is something you gain out of living as an open minded individual. I plan on doing simple things to be able to practice on being open minded, for example trying sports I never thought of doing, reading a book of a completely different genre than I’m used to, or even learning about different religions despite what I believe. Not judging another person’s way of living and even asking questions about their lifestyle can help achieve being more open minded. I see others often stick to our own opinions, and don’t bother to listen to others. One simple conversation can change your entire life. Although this is cliche, this is what I believe.  I also think with the practice of this lifestyle, a lot of problems would be able to get solved faster, a lot more ideas would be heard, and a lot more opportunities would open up for everyone. I say this because everyone would be understood a bit better, no matter your class, age, or ethnicity. Many things separate us from each other, but it shouldn’t be ourselves who separate us from one another. “

The unexamined life is not worth living” – Socrates

This quote to me is important due to what I personally believe in. I have just started living an “adult” life, since I am 18. When I get asked the question, “ What is the meaning of life,” this is what I believe. I believe it is to view the different perspectives of lives, and to grow up learning to have an open mind. Why would you want to live a life in which you don’t take the chance to simply examine everything around you.

“We live in the best of all possible worlds” – Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz

  1. Perspective is a very valuable thing. Nowadays, it seems like accepting means understanding. Just because you don't accept someone's ideas or opinions, doesn't mean you don't see where they're coming from. And in order to understand one another, we have to grasp their view. Just because we have different views, doesn't mean either of us are wrong.

  2. Don't lose your holy curiosity, as Uncle Albert instructed:

“Don’t think about why you question, simply don’t stop questioning. Don’t worry about what you can’t answer, and don’t try to explain what you can’t know. Curiosity is its own reason. Aren’t you in awe when you contemplate the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure behind reality? And this is the miracle of the human mind—to use its constructions, concepts, and formulas as tools to explain what man sees, feels and touches. Try to comprehend a little more each day. Have holy curiosity.” –Albert Einstein

But, Leibniz was wrong. This is surely NOT the best of possible worlds. We can do better, and we will if we open your minds as you suggest.

  3. this reminds me of the idea of a "walking death". The premise is that we die when we become "too old", but old isnt age, its being old in our ways. So the idea is that life stops when we stop changing and growing, once we become set in one thing we aren't really alive anymore.

  4. Open mindedness is also a very important concept to me. I strive to be as open minded as possible, especially when it comes to other cultures. I feel like being open-minded allows you to see things in a whole new way you never thought existed before, and in turn helps personal growth.

I have always been taught to keep an open mind. Honestly, I believe open-mindedness is the best way to learn and to be a well rounded individual. Depending on what the circumstances are, I really enjoy learning new things and being offered new ideas.
