Final Report Post Stoicism

Stoicism is a really interesting philosophy because it is the practice of acceptance. It is the idea that when things do not go your way you must accept it and move forward. For example, if your car beaks down you should not obsess over the fact that it broke down, you should accept it and look forward to the future. It was first practiced in Ancient Greece and Rome and it is still practiced today by many people. People who live within a high stress environment benefit from this form of philosophy. One interesting group of people who practice stoicism are athletes. They use it to their advantage to help them focus while performing. Some people who are deemed stoic are Zeno of Citium, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius. Zeno of Citium is the most imporatant philosopher of Stocis because he was the founder of the idea that you should not worry about things that did not go as planned.

Zeno of Citium :
“the fact that, after the loss of the totality of my pharmaceutical remedies, the totality of my books, as well as these recipes of reputable remedies, as well as the various editions I wrote on them, in addition to so many other works, each one of which exhibits that love of work that was mine my entire life; the fact that I felt no pain shows first the nobility of my behavior and my greatness of soul.”

He is considered the founder of Stoicism. What is interesting is that his journey of Stoicism started when his ship and cargo sank while on a voyage. The quote that I included above is about his view of this tragic event. He then landed in Athens where he visited a book store and picked up a book that outlined the philosophy of Socrates. Later he discovered Crates philosophy. He then went on to teach at a location called Stoa Poikile which was located in Athens. This was the famous porch where Stoicism was born, practiced, and taught by Zeno of Citium .

After reading about stoicism a common question is: what can you fully control? I think that this is an interesting question because there is a lot in life that we cannot control. Everything that happens in our lives can be based off of events and how they happen. If something goes wrong or something positive happens it could trigger a chain of events that could go either in someone’s favor or against it. One thing that I do think that you have control of is your happiness. This is because, like stoicism says, we can choose what to do when something does not go our way. We can choose to let the negative affect us or we can choose to accept the negative event and look forward and better ourselves.

  1. Stoicism is having a moment, unsurprisingly in times when people feel powerless, unsure of the future, and frightenend. But as I've said repeatedly, a good stoic needs also to be a good pragmatist. Accept when you must, act for reform and melioration when you can.

  2. I also did stoicism and i think your approach was very interesting. Athletes can use this mentality to take themselves out of the game and see it for what it is. Nothing can be controlled and its our reactions to those bad things that make them what they are.
