DEISM

I currently believe in a group of beliefs called Deism. This was talked about a little bit in class but not much. Deism revolves around reason and logic in order to describe the natural world. They do not believe in a need for organized religion. I personally believe that religion is a man-made product used to brainwash people. Deists believe that God does not intervene in our affairs or in this world or universe. They reject prophecies and miracles and favor more logical answers. They reject atheism believing that there is a creator. According to Deists, God has built and set up the entire natural universe with laws of physics. He initially created the universe but has had his hands off ever since. Deists still respect holy texts of other religions. However, they do not believe any of these books actually contain the words of God. They do not personify God. God does not have human feelings such as love and anger according to a Deist. This characteristic of Deism appealed to me very much as I used to be a Christian. They believe that God has not nor will he ever select a group of chosen people such as the Jews in the Bible to receive spiritual revelation.

Deists generally do not accept the existence of the Holy Trinity. Generally, Jesus is viewed as a philosopher or moral teacher, but not as the Son of God. Deism is interesting and appeals to me very strongly because I have always seen gaps in the Bible’s stories. I have always been a very rational person when it comes to many things. God initially creating all of the natural laws that we know of and then leaving it alone makes a lot of sense. Hurricane Katrina was an awful hurricane and many people asked why would God let that happen? Well, we now know from science that hurricanes are caused from the weather. It’s that plain and simple.
