The Flight From Conversation - NYTimes.com

Why I've been trying to bring a more collaborative and conversational style to the classroom:

A 16-year-old boy who relies on texting for almost everything says almost wistfully, “Someday, someday, but certainly not now, I’d like to learn how to have a conversation.”

  1. Wow!!! I looked at this article, but the part that stands out is definitely this quote! I cannot believe that anybody could say that. I wonder how many challenges this attitude will bring him in life. And how could he become so dependent on texting, moreover how could his parents let him choose this lifestyle! And why would they hurt their child this way! This is definitely unbelievable! I never thought somebody could live this way.

  2. Think of it as “I share, therefore I am.” We use technology to define ourselves by sharing our thoughts and feelings as we’re having them. We used to think, “I have a feeling; I want to make a call.” Now our impulse is, “I want to have a feeling; I need to send a text.”

This quote made me realize how true this is, at least in my case. But there are still things you cannot just discuss in a text, there are topics that require you to talk face to face. It is still surprising what society has come to nowadays, in regards to texting.

  3. It is surprising... but I admit that if texting had been available when I was a teenager I probably would have been a heavy user too. Can you guys imagine what it was like to live in a world in which the only regular direct communication between people happened face to face or voice to voice? So I wouldn't say "Don't text," just try to strike a reasonable balance. Hone your interpersonal skills by talking to people in person, devote some time to sitting quietly and reading or just thinking. Unplug for awhile on purpose every day. But enjoy the connectivity that you're lucky enough to come along for just in time.
