Wanderer above the Sea of Fog
While reading about Hilaire Belloc's riveting hike of the Brienzer Grat mountain range, which is in the Swiss Alps, I was reminded of this favorite portrait (c. 1818) by the German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. I've tended to associated this work of art with philosophy and, given our class' peripatetic emphasis (note the walking stick), I thought it appropriate to share. Perhaps someone will find it inspiring! FYI: The mountains portrayed here are supposedly based on the Elbe Sandstone mountain range, not the one in our reading.
