MARTIN LUTHER & THE 95 THESES 1438-1546

Martin Luther didn’t seek out to rebel against religion. In fact, he started to obsess over religion, and desperately wanted to be enlightened
Until he realized some alarming, “traditions” of the catholic church that didn’t seem religious at all.
- On July 2nd, 1505
His journey to become enlightened  began when he was caught in a storm and screamed out,” Save me, St. Anne, and I’ll become a monk!”

St. Anne is the mother of the Virgin Mary and the patron saint of miners, sailors, and a protector from the storms.
Who vowed to give her child to God, and she fulfilled her vow.
Subsequently in July 17th, 1505 Luther then joined a monastery of the Order of the Hermits of St. Augustine  Augustinian to fulfill his promise (to become a monk)  and made it his mission to find salvation.

-Just like St. Anne-
A monastery is a home or community for monks, “living under religious vows.”
Many believed that Luther wanted to become a monk but was always scared of his father’s push towards Luther becoming a lawyer

However,

During his time at the monastery Luther was greatly disappointed. He didn’t feel any spiritual enlightenment.

Luther was then invited to be a delegate to a catholic church in Rome at the prime age of 27
But this furthered Luther’s  disappointment  and discouraged him from religion all together when he witnessed the corruption that  happened in the church.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        -The sale of indulgences-

This led Luther to consume himself to his studies at the University of Wittenburg later receiving his doctorate and becoming a Professor of Theology.
While studying scriptures Luther FINALLY found his enlightenment what caused this?? (1513)

It was when he was preparing for lecture he came across Psalm 22:
Speaks of a man whom cried to God for deliverance from intense persecution.
“My God, my God, Why have you forsaken me?”
Is a quote from Psalm 22:1
This reminded Luther of his experience with religion and God.
-The night of the storm and relating it to his cry of mercy-

Luther FINALLY cracked the code to spiritual salvation it was not to fear God or, “ to be enslaved by religion.” It is to believe that faith will bring you salvation

Martin Luther’s anger towards the Catholic Church trying to immorally sell God’s forgiveness

“ For who in fact seeks the salvation of souls through indulgences, and not instead money for his coffers? This is evident from the way indulgences are preached .                                                               For the commissioners and preachers do nothing but extol indulgences and incite.”
WHAT PROVOKED LUTHER TO WRITE THE 95 THESES ?
The fact that John Tetzel was empowered by the Archbishop of Mainz and Pope Leo X,to sell indulgences to renovate St. Peter. Even though Prince Fredrick III  had banned the sale of indulgences.  Luther believed that the people were being conned into giving money   to achieve forgiveness from there sins. So in response to Tetzel he criticizes the indulgences with 95 reasons.       Subsequently Luther’s 95 theses traveled the eastern world  translated from Latin to German, and quickly reached its way to Rome.

AD: Who would’ve thought YOU CAN be sin free with JUST $20.99   limited offer only: YOU can also stop by for the 2 for 1 sell  if you bring a friend to purchase 10 of God’s forgivness for not just $20.99 but 15.99!!     1519 - Martin Luther directly attacked the Pope by publicly stating  that the Bible didn’t not limit the excess to interpreting scriptures to the Pope.

1520 - The Pope was fed up of Martin Luther’s protest and sent a letter of threatened him with excommunication
Later on, Luther publicly  burned the letter

1521 January- Martin Luther was officially excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church.                                                                                                                                                      1521 March-  Luther was called upon the Diet of the Worms (It was in Worms, Germany and Diet is an assembly of the Holy Roman Empire) and refused to recant his statements                                                                                                                                     1521 May - The council released, “Edict of the Worms,” basically saying , banning Luther’s writings and declaring him a “convicted heretic.”
