Nancy MacLean's most recent book, about which she will speak at this event, is DEMOCRACY IN CHAINS: THE DEEP HISTORY OF THE RADICAL RIGHT'S STEALTH PLAN FOR AMERICA. In it, she deals extensively with MTSU graduate and Nobel laureate James M. Buchanan's work, legacy, and relation to the network of Koch Brothers centers and institutes. This should be a very special visit from an esteemed author given the increased attention that MTSU has given to James M Buchanan as well as the recent 3.5 million dollar gift it has received from the Charles Koch Foundation.

DEMOCRACY IN CHAINS was a finalist for the National Book Award, the winner of the Lannan Foundation Cultural Freedom Award for an Especially Notable Book of particular scholarly or journalistic quality and relevance to the current historical moment, and the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Award in Current Affairs. The Nationmagazine named it the Most Valuable Book of 2017.

Nancy MacLean is the William H. Chafe Professor of History and Public Policy at Duke University, and the award-winning author of several other books, including BEHIND THE MASK OF CHIVALRY: THE MAKING OF THE SECOND KU KLUX KLAN, FREEDOM IS NOT ENOUGH: THE OPENING OF THE AMERICAN WORKPLACE, THE AMERICAN WOMEN'S MOVEMENT, 1945-2000, and DEBATING THE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT: 1945 TO THE PRESENT.

Professor MacLean's visit is jointly sponsored by The MTSU Distinguished Lecture Fund, United Campus Workers, The College of Liberal Arts, Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Department of History, Department of English, Department of Sociology & Anthropology, Department of Global Studies and Human Geography, American Association of University Professors--Tennessee Conference & MTSU Chapter, MTSolidarity, and MTSU Social Work Forum.

Our questions and her answers, below, have been condensed and lightly edited for clarity.
Describe the experience of coming under attack for your book.
The personal attacks have been a shock. Knowing I’m not the first helps, though. As I say in the book, climate scientists and investigative reporters, among others, have received similar treatment from right-wing critics when they published their work... (Chronicle of Higher Education, continues)
