Read James himself, in John McDermott's anthology and the Library of America's two volumes on him. Maybe the best place to start, though, is with his correspondence. THere are two old abridged volumes free online, beginning with this one: https://archive.org/ stream/ lettersofjames01jameuoft/ lettersofjames01jameuoft_djvu. txt.
And if you really get into James you can pick up my book.
Best biography of James is by Robert Richardson...
And of course, as previously noted, John Kaag's new book Sick Souls, Healthy Minds: How William James Can Save Your Life, and the one we're reading now-American Philosophy: A Love Story.
