Advantages
The evolution of technology can be beneficial to humans in many
different ways. At the medical level, new and developing technology is able to
help treat sicker people or combat very harmful viruses and bacteria that we weren’t
previously able to combat. The invention of the computer is also a very
important stepping stone. The computer provides the ability to communicate,
work, and apply yourself in many different ways that was previously unknown to
man or woman. For companies, these technologies are saving time and money. For
example, Tesla’s production chain of cars is almost completely automated. Now
looking at the banking world, exchanges of money are especially easy. You can
scan your check to deposit it into your account instead of physically going
there, you can have direct deposit setup with your work as well, and ATM’s are
becoming more and more prominent for the transfer of currency. Additionally,
new forms of currency are developed like bitcoin. The alteration of physical
storage units to virtual storage units is increasingly important for multiple
different reasons. You can have a replica of your phone on the virtual storage
network so that if you were to break or lose your physical device, you wouldn’t
lose everything. This is extremely useful in today’s world.
Disadvantages
Modern technology has its disadvantages as
well. For example, the dependence on new technology. Man/Woman no longer needs
to think. From something as simple as a calculator, Man/Woman rely on such a
simple device for calculations ranging from simple mental arithmetic to complex
problems. See, both an advantage and disadvantage. The development and use of
technology also then require more rules and regulations. For example, internet
use is an individual freedom in comparison to something like the invention and
use of the atomic bomb. Although this is an extreme comparison, it is true. We,
as a nation, are not able to exercise our individual freedom to decide to perform
such an act. The decline of human capital implies an increase in unemployment.
Although, this is theoretical, it is a possibility. After taking all of this
information into account, now you have to realize that all of this is applicable
to our next generation at an even greater potency than we are experiencing now.
Finally, most technological discoveries aim to reduce human effort. Therefore,
humans are doing less and less work while machines are doing more and more work
thus implying how obsolete humans could be one day.
All in all, technology can be extremely helpful, and
sometimes necessary in today’s world. It is a very touchy subject that is different
for everyone depending on their respective opinions. I cannot say one way or
another why technology is better or worse, but what I can say is that holistically,
technology is helpful and pushing us forward in our human development which is
necessary to not become stagnant in today’s world. There are many different fields
and aspects of technology all of which are subject to change and people’s
opinions. (This was more of a discussion topic in and of itself).

I'd agree that technology has, on balance, been a boon for humanity. In any event, we've been enhancing ourselves technologically ever since the wheel, and the printing press, and so many other advances. But in our time the pace and impact of technological development have been so accelerated, it's really imperative that we approach every new and shiny bauble with the central question: will this support and enhance our humanity, or will it diminish us? We need to learn to say NO to some things, and not embrace every new thing just because we can. Don't we?
ReplyDeleteI agree. Not every developed technology should be implemented or utilized if it will diminish our humanity. While acknowledging this, I think it is also imperative that we appreciate and realize what we, as humans, are able to develop through technological innovation. Whether or not it is utilized is a different story.
