In chapter 19 of Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors,
Sagan and Druyan ask “What is Human?”. What distinguishes us from other
animals? Is it our social ability, courage, rationality, kissing, reproductive
posture, self-awareness, or language? Or do other animals exhibit some or all
those traits and we’re not really all that different?

In chapter 21, Sagan and Druyan speak of “Old
slogans and hatreds are dusted off. What was only recently muttered guiltily is
now offered as political axiom and agenda. There are renewed appeals to
ethnocentrism, xenophobia, homophobia, racism, sexism, and territoriality.” Given
that this was published in 1992, what was occurring in years shortly before
that which warranted that comment and yet makes it so relevant today?
