#10 Allegory of the Cave

Rachel, Chase, and Kyle- Plato's Allegory of The Cave

First we will read the Allegory of the Cave, then explain the meaning behind it, and then discuss how you can apply the cave to modern everyday life.

Here's a link to the story; it's not required you read it before class but it would probably be beneficial: www.Michaelbaur.com/teaching/PlatoCave.pdf

Quiz Questions:
1.  Who do the people in the cave represent?
2. What does the light symbolize?
3. According to Plato, what is the only government that would work in society?
4. What does Plato assume the masses around us to be?
5. What message was Plato trying to convey with the allegory?
6. Are there any modern examples of the cave that perfectly represent the point Plato was trying to make?

Discussion Questions:
1. The cave is meant to illustrate how philosophy is an activity; it's difficult and it's aim is freedom. To what extent do you agree with this?
2. Why do you think the released prisoner is ridiculed when he comes back to the cave?
3.  What event in your life made you come out of the cave? Did you find something that wasn't what you thought it was?
4. Why do you think Plato mentions the fact that the prisoners retaliation was violent after hearing of the outside world?
5. What is another modern example of Plato's cave?
6. Do you agree/disagree with any examples we have presented you?
