"30 Rock" and Philosophy (Sec. 11/ Post 4)

And moving on from Jenna we go to Jack Donaghy, Liz's boss and mentor.

Wikipedia defines stoicism as "teaching the development of self control and fortitude as a means of overcoming destructive emotions" and as Jack spends a good portion of his time on the show handing Liz advice on how to deal with her quirky and hectic life, I thought it necessary to relate his actions to this school of philosophy.

Sometimes, however, Jack gives other characters pieces of advice in a fatherly and friendly fashion so that they can better their lives.

Now Jack knows that life can be tough for everyone, and so if he particularly likes the person that life is giving lemons to, he will almost always try to help them out, partly evidenced in the above clip.

Now this is not to say that Jack is always stoic. Yes, he is more often than not put on a bit of a pedestal, as he has such an elite career. It is quite apparent that Jack thinks that he is better than a lot of people, whereas true stoics would say that no man is better in any means than another.
