Introductions

Opening Day Fall 2019. Let's introduce ourselves, Fall 2019 CoPhilosophy collaborators. (I'll tell you in class why I call my version of the Intro course "CoPhilosophy." But maybe you can guess, from the William James quote above.)

I invite you all to hit "comments" below share your own introductions, and (bearing in mind that this is an open site) answer two basic questions: Who are you? and Why are you here? (in this course, on this campus, in this state, on this planet...)

Our first class meeting will consist mainly of introductions and a heads-up that this is an unconventional course in ways I hope you'll find delightful, instructive, and rewarding. If you don't like to move, breathe, and converse in the open air on nice days, this course may be a challenge. But, if you don't especially like the conventional lecture-style academic model in which I talk and you scribble silently in your seats, it may be just what you've been looking for.

We'll not go over the syllabus or get bogged down in the nuts and bolts of course mechanics on Day One, there's plenty of time for those details later. Peruse the blogsite and syllabus (linked in the right margin) before next class and let me know what's unclear. Meanwhile, read your classmates' intros and post your own.

I'm Dr. Oliver. I live in Nashville with my wife, two dogs we "rescued" in May 2018 (Nell, a sweet & gentle Pit/Boxer, and Pita, a sweet and feisty Dachsund/Lab), and an old cat (Zeus). Older Daughter lives in California. Younger Daughter is a college junior.

My office is 300 James Union Building (JUB). My office hours are Monday thru Thursday 4-5 pm, & by appointment.

On nice days office hours may be outside, or at an alternate location. Check my office door for details. I answer emails during office hours, but not at all on weekends. Surest way to get a quick response: come in or call during office hours.

I've been at MTSU since the early '00s, teaching philosophy courses on diverse subjects including atheism, childhood, happiness, the environment, the future, epistemology, metaphysics, Anglo-American philosophy, consciousness, evolution, and bioethics. Just did a fun summer course in the Master of Liberal Arts (MALA) program called Identity and Truth. I'm always open to working with students on Independent Readings courses as well, if you don't find a listed course in something you're interested in. Let me know if I can ever help you with that.

My Ph.D. is from Vanderbilt. I'm originally from Missouri, near St. Louis. I was indoctrinated as a Cardinals fan in early childhood, so I understand something about religious zeal. My undergrad degree is from the University of Missouri ("Mizzou") in Columbia MO. (I wish my schools weren't in the SEC-I don't approve of the inordinate emphasis on major collegiate sports culture or football brain injuries, as I'm sure to tell you again.)

My philosophical expertise, such as it is, centers on the American philosophical tradition of William James and John Dewey. A former student once asked me to respond to a questionnaire, if you're curious you can learn more about me there.

What you most need to know about me, though, is that I'm a peripatetic and will encourage you all to join me in that philosophical lifestyle as often as possible during discussion time. (If you're not sure what peripatetic means, scan the right sidebar or read the syllabus or ask me. Or look it up.)

I post my thoughts regularly to my blogs Up@dawn and Delight Springs, among others, and to Twitter (@osopher), and am continuing to experiment with podcasting as a classroom tool this semester. Follow me if you want to.

But of course, as Brian Cohen said, you don't have to follow anyone. (Extra credit if you get that reference... and real extra credit if you realize that my "extra credit" is usually rhetorical.) However, if a blog or podcast link turns up with the daily quiz (which will always be posted on this site no later than the night before class), you might find it helpful to read or listen.

Enough about me. Who are you? (Where are you from, where have you been, what do you like, who do you want to become,...?) Why are you here? (On Earth, in Tennessee, at MTSU, in philosophy class)? Hit "comments" below and post your introduction, then read your classmates'... and bear in mind that this is an open site. The world can read it. (The world's probably busy with other stuff, of course - Drumpf and Kardashians and cooking shows and other examples of what passes for "reality" these days.)

Hello there, everyone. My name is Fung Chindavong and I’m from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Some things I like are old school anime, old school R&B, and of course, food. (lol) Before I came to MTSU, I completed most of my prerequisite courses at Nashville State Community College, however, now I’m here at MTSU to get my bachelors degree, and then go on to medical school. I am working towards being an anesthesiologist and also pursuing my doctorate degree as well. I look forward to learning a lot in this class.

Hi everyone, my name is Naomi Donalson but like to go by Naomi Lynne, my middle name. I am originally from Orange County California but moved to Tenneessee when I was 7. To sum up who I am , i am a child of God. I grew up with different religions to both sides of my family but chose to be Baptist and attend New Vision Life. I live my life through that and coming to MTSU was a part of that. MTSU is also convenient because it is close to home. I am a singer as well. I write my own music and sing time to time at church. I have been an athlete my whole life. Growing up was my brothers, dad , and I. I was definitely tom boy to say the least. I continued running track and still do! My major is Pre-law Political Science to further my education in being a sports agent and my career goal is to be a postie influence in any way to my work field and community. Cant wait to see what I accomplish within the years! Also, I may gave a RBF at times but i promise im really a nice person so don't ever be afraid to talk to me :)

    3. Hello, Naomi Lynne. I think it's really interesting that you've decided on Pre-Law Political Science as your major! I thought about going into pre-law as well, towards lawyering but I decided that there are already many lawyers out there already. I understand having a RBF face as I have the same thing, but it can't be helped sometimes. Can't wait to get to know one another more during class. Good luck!

Hi everyone, my name is David Rizkalla, I was originally a California native, I moved to Tennessee when I was six years old. I have many ambitions in life, one of my main ones is to soon be a Pharmacist. I took various steps to put me on that road, I originally went to Nashville State Community College, I figured the next step was to transfer to a University. So I considered MTSU one of my best options. I am very excited to learn more about philosophy. I feel like it can give me some perspective, and help me for the rest of my life.It will also be a very wisdom enriching experience. I am very excited for whats to come!

I moved to Tennessee 4 years ago, mainly to live closer to my grandparents (they’re in their 90s and need help). Other than learning about technology I love hiking, watching/playing tennis, and traveling. Growing up, my family and I were constantly moving, which opened my eyes in many different ways and made me more curious. I believe this course will help me to learn more about philosophy and hear different opinions.

    SECTION 12

You ask, “who am I?”. As if one is ever able to answer that completely and consecutively the same… I, like every other being around me, am a constant ebb and flow of complexity that I will not ever truly comprehend, nor anyone will ever truly comprehend. Is that not why philosophy still is pertinent? If everyone had an answer to the question, “Who am I?”, then we wouldn’t be in this class to begin with… We only have an inkling of understanding of our true self, or whatever the “self” may be… But, to play along with this game, I will continue with this: Hi there! I am Brianna Foutz. I just go by Bri most of the time though. I am a sophomore and a half, studying Political Science and minoring in Apparel Design. Yes, I know, they aren’t linear fields of study... I am a classical violinist, as well as an avid cat lover, runner, D&D player, and I write poetry and assorted monologues, amongst other things. Basically, I have quite a large handful of interests. I’m from the north, where I lived in Ohio for 14 years. Don’t go to Ohio. There is nothing there. I moved to Cleveland, TN when my father got a job as an engineer at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga. When my time came to graduate high school, I chose to pursue my studies at this university. That is why I am here, geographically speaking. As far as my ambitions go, I suppose I would not be opposed to being a politician, or a campaign manager, or anything on that caliber. I also would like to be a published author someday… But I’ll just take it one day at a time.

I am apprehensive of this class for one reason alone; I cannot stand politics or really political debates in general. To my knowledge, no one in any section of this course is a politician, senator, or any other government official which brings me to the conclusion that everyones' opinion of the political climate is just a crude opinion of someone else's opinion. Long explanation short; unoriginal and misinformed opinions interest me none. On the topic of God and other religious beliefs, I am more than willing to present my take on the meaning of our existence since there is no "right" answer. It is a different way of thinking from me and I'd love to hear some more reasoning on it! In my experience and personal ideals, I always believed that passion inspires hard work, and then that hard work has more of an ability to lead to success than not. I always believed that if you consistently work hard then it will pay off, and that if I want something then my first action is to work for it. I'm not unreasonable and totally understand this statement from the position of how some people will have more natural success than others because of predetermined skill sets. I still would love to hear your reasoning.

Hello my name is Brian Perez. Playing video games and trying to learn new instruments are some things I like to do but now have less time to do. I am a Freshman here at MTSU and am currently studying to major in Business. I believe that I was put here in order to earn a living and give back what my mother risked to come to America in the first place; she wanted me to have a better life than her, so I intend to do so.

    1. Good to meet you Jessi! I agree completely that learning how others think is very intriguing and extremely important as well. I believe for most people that understanding the way others think and behave can be exponentially more beneficial than the library of information we store in our brains and skills we learn toward our careers.

Hello everyone, my name is Elliote Gay. I'm a 21 year old transplant to Tennessee, I've lived here sense about 2014, and claim New York City as my 'hometown', but have lived all over the world, and in every state except Alaska. I'm here to learn how to use technological developments of the 21st century to help the world around me, as oppose to just using it to make as much money as possible, as has been done with it so far. I'm a huge believer in using technology to help the world at large, the potential is great if it is used properly, and with all the exciting developments getting closer every day, that potential is only ever increasing.

Elliote! Your motivation and ambition is quite admirable. I, too, believe that technology needs to be utilized more effectively to help a broader portion of the world in more intricate ways, rather than just catering to individuals and niche ideas. Though, that may be dangerous... (i.e. Horizon: Zero Dawn) Only time will tell!

Hello everyone, my name is Brandon Beech. I am currently going on my second year here at MTSU and eagerly seeking to finish my degree after having been away from college for a few years. I am 24 and work a full time job as a District Manager along with my coursework. I have been blessed to meet a great variety of people from very different backgrounds through my time in the professional world and hope to use this opportunity in college to really help define my true ambitions in life and use every piece of knowledge gained to propel me into the business world.
I really enjoy discussing in length topics including psychology, philosophy, religion, politics, and other controversial topics. I believe different perspectives help create a better framework for thought for us all and allow myself to keep an open mind with whomever I converse with. As I continue on this journey of really developing the self I aspire to be, I like to "enjoy the process" as much as possible.

Take what you will from them and feel free to comment. :) Don't let the world steal your sweetness because to be human is to be kind. Perspective is the ability to see your own world view but also to understand everyone else has a completely different one. It's healthy to be strong-willed until it crosses the line of ignorance. I believe in the strangeness of people. Plan for 100 years but live like you only have today. God is good and if it quacks... it's a duck!

Hi everyone! My name is Sebastian Hendrick (section 12) and I'm a first year student here at MTSU. I'm originally from Sweden (Europe) and in a couple of days I will have been here for 2 years. Many people ask me why i decide to move and i can never find a better explanation other than I wanted to experience the so called "American life". My hobbies include almost anything online as I'm a huge nerd (Games, shows, anime, chatting etc), but I also enjoy doing stuff outside like seeing the cool landscapes that are so different from Sweden (I recently did a trip to Vegas which was cool). I'm taking this class as it kind of aligns with my major (psychology) and I think some of the questions raised in Philosophy could help at grasping the human mind (at least a little). I also find the subject quite interesting so there's that. I hope we can all have fun together and look forward to seeing some of you in class.
