It all started when I was assigned to do a project over The Simpsons. It was then when I realized just how important and how powerful cartoons can be. It changed the way I look at cartoons it made me want to go back and look at all the episodes I watched and see if I can find a hidden message. I used to love watching the Simpson’s little did I know that they were predicting history right before my eyes. As I got older I begin to watch different cartoons. I begin to watch America s favorite cartoon Family Guy. I was still young so I did not get a lot of the jokes. Now, when I watch Family Guy I am more into it then I ever was. For Example, episodes like the one about OJ Simpson. When I first watched the episode at the age of 14 I didn’t even know OJ Simpson was. I recently watched the episode a week ago and was mind blown about how many jokes I missed.

Not only do these cartoons relate to modern day life, they are made to portray the American life style. I think their creators did not want a typical everyday cartoon they wanted something the whole family could look at and find enjoyment. Now, saying that there is a few episodes when there is a lot of sexual content. So after doing a little research the show is geared for adults. Which will explain the all of the mature jokes behind it. Nowadays we have a third family show that is in the top three watched shows and that one is American Dad. In my opinion, it is just like family guy except instead of having a talking dog they had a talking alien. There is another show that stood out to me, The boondocks. The boondocks is show about two young boys who live with their grandfather in the suburbs. It is also a family show that gives a lot of real life lessons just like the other two shows. The boondocks however is a lot more graphic and definitely targeted for adults not children. I think it could be targeted for the African American folks in America. A lot of their episodes include a lot of celebrity’s just like the other shows. But in the Boondocks the celebrity’s will play a whole new character but one can easily recognize the voices and figure out who the celebrity is. For example, the actor Katt Williams plays a pimp named “apimpnamedslickback”.

This brings me to my conclusion, you can learn a lot from siting down and actually watching cartoons. One could simply just have a flashback or one could have a better understanding of a saying, historic events, stereotypes, and even reasons why celebrities do dumb things. The author of these cartoons sometimes have to deal with lawsuits from the celebrity’s you might as well make it worth it for the creators and learn something new. You never know what you’re going to see watching these modern-day cartoons.

  1. You CAN learn a lot from the best cartoons, but as you note: young viewers typically don't get most of the jokes, and thus fail to learn much at all. They'd learn more if they spent a fraction of that screen-time reading, and then would be sooner and better prepared to "get" the cartoons in later life.

On the other hand, it used to be a cartoon wasteland of Road Runner, Caspar the Friendly Ghost, and the like - clever enough, and engaging, but formulaic and lacking in educational content.
