Happy birthday Tom Paine

  • “The mind once enlightened cannot again become dark.” ...
  • “These are the times that try men's souls.” ...
  • “Independence is my happiness, and I view things as they are, without regard to place or person; my country is the world, and my religion is to do good.”
  • “It is from the Bible that man has learned cruelty, rapine, and murder; for the belief of a cruel God makes a cruel man.”
  • “One good schoolmaster is of more use than a hundred priests.”
  • “I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own churchAll national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.”
  • “I have always strenuously supported the right of every man to his own opinion, however different that opinion might be to mine. He who denies to another this right, makes a slave of himself to his present opinion, because he precludes himself the right of changing it.”
  • “We have it in our power to begin the world over again.”
  • “THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country..."

I like this quote. I feel that perhaps Thomas Paine is trying to say that once the mind has gained a piece of new information, it acts as a catalyst to finding more new information, and therefore you cannot be left in the dark because you're constantly seeking something new to learn.

Paine played a major role in Americans getting their human rights. He was one of the first people to fight for our rights.

"The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion."..

Love this quote from Tom Paine. I can relate to it. I believe that if you live your life being good to the world and to the people in it, you will be just fine.

Really like this quote. I think it is extremely important to fairly judge the legitimacy of different beliefs. People that take too much pride in their beliefs are holding themselves back from learning new ways of thinking.

I agree with this. My church's fixation on fire an brimstone taught me little as a kid. Anything useful I could have learned from the principles being taught were overshadowed by fear.
