pro-life and pro-choice debates

Abigail McAdams
PART 1

One Of the biggest arguments in the united states today stands with the prochoice debate. Whether abortion should be legal as an individual choice or illegal for expecting mothers. The reason this debate has yet to be decided stands as an argument of one of the oldest confrontations in the United states. Weather religious opinions and motivations should be taken into consideration when creating laws. You deal with the conflicting ideas of morally ending a life and weather our protections by the constitution engulf the right to execute anything growing inside our body.

If lawmakers try to side with humanists and the right to life of a embryo then the opposing side will point out our right to freedom of choice and the liberties ensured to us through the constitution. However not restricting abortion would result in a loss of respect for life. If christianity is one of the biggest supporters for life and anti abortion contributors then by giving into porlife requests are we favoring the ideals of one religious group more than others. You must ask yourself if it is even about anything religious or if those not in the same situation can't relate to the struggle of a parent with an unplanned pregnancy. Those who grew up with only one parent or even one who was not planning on having a child, typically lean pro choice because they can relate to a child who would be born from such situation. Those who grew up in a relatively apple pie, white picket fence, family tend to go prolife and demean the idea that any child would rather lose its life opposed to missing out on luxuries in life.

There are also situational aspects that affect the public opinion. Would anyone truly be able to tell a woman who was sexually abused or raped that she must keep the resulting child. How about a fourteen year old girl who was taken advantage of and is already in foster care or some sort of state facility. Many can stand on the outside looking in with a very strong opinion however when it is personalized and you are forced to take into consideration the details of specific cases it then becomes a hard complicated question.

Is something without eyes, fingers or a brain living. Many have a problem with the fact a child with a heart beat is living and no one should be able to take a life away in minutes. We give adults the power to kill animals they have adopted. Even though they have means of communicating a brain a heart beat and more physical human characteristics than a barely living human embryo and no one blinks an eye now a days when someone has an animal put to sleep because they are unwanted. Such as the PAWS facility that euthanize unwanted animals who arent adopted early enough. There are no comparisons for a baby and an animal however an embryo that has yet to develop human like characteristics is not yet a living child.

  1. "Weather..." - whether

Separation of church & state answers that question: in a democratic society we're all free to be guided in our personal choices by religious motives and values, but we're not entitled to impose them on our peers.

"humanists and the right to life of a embryo" - humanists do not all, or even generally, take this position

"not restricting abortion would result in a loss of respect for life" - begs the question. Real respect for life extends beyond the life of unborn fetuses.

"Many can stand on the outside looking in with a very strong opinion however when it is personalized and you are forced to take into consideration the details of specific cases it then becomes a hard complicated question." Indeed.

"an embryo that has yet to develop human like characteristics is not yet a living child" - right. The issue is not when life begins, but when personhood begins.

  2. You forgot a period behind 'position' in the second line Dr. O.
Regardless of religion. There is a scientific designation to life. Most of society disregards that with the pro choice Idea. Throw religion out the window it is a 'potential' life. Call it whatever you would like it is a cushion to make people feel better about the selfish decision to end another 'potential' life. In today's day and age, the philosophers we have studied could've been aborted. No human has the endowed right to end another before it has the 'say-so' to begin. Liken to the American Revolution, Britain kept us out of everything. Only difference is, Babies can't fight back.

  3. You also forgot to mention how expensive giving birth and raising a child can be. Even with the healthcare coverage, it can cost a couple thousand dollars in hospital bills. If the child is born with complications, then the parents will have to pay for those health bills for years.
Children grow so quickly, especially when they are younger, that clothing and diapers and furniture has too short of a lifespan for what it is worth.
The people and places that are pro-life only believe that until the child is born. After it is born, there are few programs that help the mother with the costs of the child.

    1. Then you should be making the responsible decision either 1) Not to have sex. 2) Wrap your freaking Penis.(wear a condom) Or 3) Birth Control...
Instead of ending a potential life, because of the selfish decision to have sex. As doctor Seuss says, "A Person is a person, no matter how small." On top of that, I'm more than certain that if these babies could vote, Abortion would not exist. A good Quote by my boy Reagan is, " I've noticed that those that are for abortion have already been born."

  4. I agree with a lot of your points. Something I do want to say is that I believe it all starts from before the egg is fertilized by the sperm. If you as a person know that you are not ready for a child, nor do you want one. However, you put yourself in a situation where you end up pregnant, I believe that you and your partner involved should be forced to live with you decision. There is obviously one exception to this, which is rape. Then I do believe that wanting to get rid of the fetus is acceptable.
