You can have free will if G...#10- makeup for 10/18

You can have free will if God knows everything you are going to do because he is not telling us what to do. There is a difference in being told what to do or in having your actions predestined and in God just knowing. God is an all powerful being whom the concept of time does not apply to; he can look at us and see what we have done, are doing, and will do whenever he wants. He knows what decision we will make based on our free will because he knows us.
I think God judging us on actions he already knows we will make is a paradox too, just like God knowing your every move but you still have a choice about what that next move is. The Manichaeans believed all goodness comes from the soul and evil from the body; I believe God created us with goodness in our soul but when we are on earth, desires for things can control our body thus creating evil. So, if we can ultimately choose to be good and not give in to those desires because of our own free will then God can judge us if we do not choose goodness. Even though he knows what we will pick, based on our free will, he created us to be ultimately good and just because we do not choose good does not mean we do not get to live; it does not mean he will destroy all evil because he did not create us with evil in mind. So, this is not it will not turn us into “pre-programmed machines” because it is not predestination, it is just God pre-knowing.
Happiness is a state of mind; God wants us to not place our happiness on external things because those things will disappear. Our happiness has to be internal because our relationship with God is internal. We read in A Little History of Philosophy that God and goodness are the same thing; so when we focus on our relationship with God as an internal thing and as our happiness, we are also choosing to be good. We are not giving in to bodily desires and creating evil.
When you take all of this into account and look at things like the Las Vegas shooting or just anything generally bad in the world, it is hard to be okay with the fact that God let this evil exist. Obviously, no one should look at these things and be okay with it or say it is not terrible if you look at this specific, certain way because it is terrible and it is not okay. We have to keep in mind that God did not create or predestine this evil, technically, because he gave us a choice. We were allowed to use our own free will to make this choice; God just already knows what it is. When we look at it as God already knowing it is hard not to ask, “Well why did he let it happen? If he knew he could have stopped it, could he not?” And I guess if we are technically speaking he could have stopped it; but what if he is not powerful enough to stop it? What if when it comes to our own free will, he cannot stop the decisions we make, he is just aware of those decisions?
Rachelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15702323507411133343noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2619743764213415433.post-22990260942886429172017-10-19T14:10:32.179-05:002017-10-19T14:10:32.179-05:00#6

No; I think it's a bit presumptuous or even arrogant to think an all-powerful god would entertain himself by playing house with human souls.

2. No; praying never works. I think at the heart of it, as many religions are shown to involve some form of prayer, it's actually more therapeutic than spiritual, forcing or encouraging followers to reflect on life, and not bottle things up.

3. Probably twiddling my thumbs. There's nothing else I could do. I might pester the guards.

4. I don't think there's a right or wrong origin for happiness, as I see it all as just an experience. If people derive happiness from others' success, that's perfectly fine, and we see this frequently in parents.

5. I think right and wrong (and thus good and evil) are all relative to the individual. For instance, Hitler thought he was doing the world a favor by eliminating the Jews, despite most people believing the holocaust to be among the most horrible events in human history. Similarly, most people would not hesitate at the opportunity to go back in time and kill all the Nazi leaders before it all began, despite this being a horrible thing to wish on someone.

6. No; I don't believe in a god, and I know morality to be human in nature, not divine. The bible tells followers to do horrible things (e.g. to non-believers, minorities, or women). However, most people nowadays don't believe in these specific parts of the scripture. What then, besides the bible, are they using to arrive at this conclusion? I like to think that the only afterlife possibilities are positive ones but I definitely believe this is possible. However, I don't let whatever fear of hell I have effect how I live my life.
2.I pray...rarely. Praying is one of those things that makes me feel better sometimes. Sometimes there are things I feel like I can't control and praying about it just makes me feel like I can say "okay, that's all I can do, it's out of my hands". For me personally, though, I don't know that I necessarily pray to God, I feel like I really just pray to the Universe if that makes sense. I think people pray because a lot of them think that their God/angels/someone in heaven is listening to them and going to help them with their problems or whatever they pray about.
3. I feel like this is something I couldn't really answer unless I was actually living it, but I'll do my best. I feel like I would just reflect on my life a lot, think about what I've done, what I wish I had done/done differently, and think about how things would be if I wasn't about to die. I wish I could say I wouldn't care or try to change anything but I don't think that would be the case.
5. No. I think that some things are just inherently terrible no matter how you think about it. I don't think there's a legitimate, no bs reason that would make something like the Las Vegas shootings not seem terrible.
6. No. Anybody can be good. You don't have to believe in God or follow any certain religion to be good or do good (even though I know some people that would disagree with me).
8. I don't really think He could. If you really believe that God creates us with a pre-set list of choices to make and exactly how we are going to live our lives already planned out, then I don't really know how we could be judged for doing so.
9. I don't think so. I think a lot of us have an idea of what God is, but not everyone really grasps the concept or goes in depth with it enough to pursue it in its entirety.
12. I think under the right circumstances they could. But a lot of philosophy is more science based and kinda doesn't agree with religion.
16. I personally value tranquility over salvation. To me I want inner peace for myself more than the acceptance of a god right now.
18. I see the job of philosophy as having discussion, making people think and question what they know or believe. I will do it when sickness has fallen on someone.
3. I would spend it in thought. Thinking of all the wrongs I did. I would think about my family and loved ones. I would sit there probably crying about how I'd miss them. I think I'd think more about what I'd be missing rather than what would be in store for me.
4. I think I'm happy for the right reasons. I don't care for little things like winning sports teams or buying things for myself. I'm more happy about what life ahs given me and who I get to share my life with.
5.I think some things can be slightly terrible but as far child abuse, mass murder, those things are things I would say are unforgivable. I just can’t bring myself to the belief of it, I have never had an overwhelming feeling that that is truth and I have always been more focused on the life I am living and not the possibility of an eternity.
• Do you pray? Why? Is Augustine's request for chastity postponed the sort of thing you pray for? What do you pray for, and what do you think the purpose of prayer is? Is it like submitting your Xmas wish-list, or something else? I do not pray, but I will sometimes put thoughts into the universe. When someone is ill, or I want to send good luck to someone I will make that manifesto, but that is the closest I come to prayer.
• How would you spend your last days in prison, awaiting execution? I would probably work on writing something for people that I know, just a note explaining some of the thought processes I was having.
• In light of what Philosophy tells Boethius about happiness coming from within, would you say you tend to be happy for the right reasons? Should you be happy (for instance) when your favorite team wins? I think that for the most part I am happy for the right reasons. There are things of the world that can bring me excitement – like favorite sports teams winning – and I may at times erroneously call this happiness but I am able to identify when I am experiencing happiness vs. pleasure, excitement, etc.
• Do you agree that "nothing is terrible in itself-it all depends on how you think about it"? What about mass murder (Las Vegas, for instance... or cancer... or child abuse...)? I believe that some things are simply terrible. I believe that intention and perspective can work together in a way that often makes the possibility of moral relativity present.
• Is God and goodness the same, for you? I do not believe there is a god, so no.
• Can you have free will if a god knows everything you're going to do? How is divine foreknowledge not "predestination"? How would it not turn us into "pre-programmed machines" without free will? You cannot have free will if there is an all-knowing god. There is not a difference between divine foreknowledge and predestination.
• How can the god who created you with the specific nature, inclinations, and preferences you possess then fairly judge you for making the wrong choices? Can’t.
• Is "having an idea of God" the same as grasping the concept of God, in all that it means and entails? I don’t think that it is at all. I think that like everything else, you can have a base knowledge of something without understanding it or having a mental connection to it. I think that in terms of how spiritual the relationship is said to be, grasping the concept of God would require feeling the presence of him, or having the feeling that people liken to this. Not just having an idea.
• What other properties should a god have, besides being an "uncaused cause"? A God should have more power/knowledge than the average mortal.
• Is it more explanatory, or in some other way more satisfying, to call a 1st cause "God" rather than "Nothing" or "the Universe" or "the Big Bang"... ? It, in my opinion, is less explanatory and not in any way satisfying.
• How should philosophy and religion relate to one another? Can they peacefully coexist? I think that philosophy and religion can peacefully coexist but there is a clear difference and I don’t know if it serves to say that they relate. Religion can be broken down philosophically, like anything else. There is philosophy to religion but there is no religion to philosophy.
Greynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2619743764213415433.post-25354046194491899632017-10-18T15:35:30.710-05:002017-10-18T15:35:30.710-05:00Nava Sepehri

Everyone has a fear or has experienced fear at one point in their lives. In this short essay I will rant about the philosophy of Donald Trump. As I was saying before, fear is the strongest element in human cognition. Fear ranges from person to person, however, everyone has a fear. We all know that one person who claims to have “no fear”, but I promise you if a cougar jumped out at them from nowhere they would experience fear. Throughout history, a large fear has been the unknown. As humans we don’t like the thought of not knowing what’s going to happen next because we are all moral beings and out lives could end at any moment. If we don’t know what is to come then death might be to come without our knowing. Recently America has been a very fearful nation which positively correlates with the political and overall tension of this nation. I believe that Donald Trump’s philosophy is based upon fear. Ever since 9/11 America has been skeptical towards Islam. The same thing happened with the Japanese and the Russians etc. etc. etc. I understand and I empathize with Americans in the sense that they don’t feel safe. Donald Trump used this fear and blew it out of proportion. He made is seem that Islam was to blame for terrorism and that they are the enemy. In all reality, Islam extremists are to blame, not Islam. I personally know many muslims, I was born in a muslim country. Not only muslims but also Mexicans. He used fear once again buy implying that the “bad” Mexicans are being sent to America by Mexico. First of all, this in itself is a lie. He once again used fear to overweigh the facts of a situation. That’s how he won the election. He took the common American’s fears and blew it out of truth and out of proportion and now he’s the President of the United States. This tactic reminds me of Hitler a little, don’t you agree?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07470184245090769028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2619743764213415433.post-5401408733970819732017-10-18T15:26:34.640-05:002017-10-18T15:26:34.640-05:00#10 AQA

I do believe that I am happy for all the right reasons. My happiness comes through the fact that I am attending college for free, have a loving family, and other facts of that nature. True happiness does not occur when I eat my favorite meal, or buy my favorite pair of shoes.
#5) I do not believe that nothing is terrible. Mass shootings are terrible, no exceptions. There's no "this happened for reasons unknown to us" this happened because a man with mental illness had access to guns. Only people who are seriously sick would do something like that.
#6) No god and goodness are not the same thing to me because if god controls everything then why do terrible, unspeakable things happen every single day. This answer is biased, of course, because I am non-religious.
#7) You can have free will if god knows everything you're going to do because you yourself don't know what is to come which gives you control over your life and therefore free will.
#8) When you put it this way I suppose god can't judge you, if he created you to be the way you are then it would be hypocritical to judge you.
#9) Having an idea of god is thinking you know what might be true whereas grasping the concept of god means you're certain that what you believe is true. No they are not the same.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07470184245090769028noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2619743764213415433.post-41071617763935782042017-10-18T14:56:45.859-05:002017-10-18T14:56:45.859-05:00#10

Even if I was religious I still wouldn't believe in hell. It's just a silly concept, I don't buy it. Yes people are cruel but that's human nature, people are messed up. Humans are imperfect thorough their biology (nature vs. nurture), not because lucifer is controlling them like puppets.
#2)I do not pray, however, I believe that praying can help one's mental health. Through the psychology point of view, praying helps people believe in themselves, it makes them feel like they have control over things they don't have control over.
#3) I would spend my last days in prison swimming, if they have that there, and meditating. Things that would calm me down before the execution. Everyone prays for different things, that is just life.
2. I would spend my last days in prison writing out everything and anything that I have ever wanted to say in my entire lifetime. There is of course not enough time to say everything but I would want to say as much as humanly possible.
3. If we are talking mass murdering, it doesn't matter how you look at it, it is a terrible thing. This world is extremely black, white and gray, HOWEVER, when something is as bad as killing millions of innocent people, there is no way around that.
4. Just because you know there is a God, doesn't mean you understand the bible. Plain and simple.
5. Philosophy and Religion should coexist peacefully because they have a lot to do with each other, in regards to the way people think. Everyone has there own type of belief system, they should be able to philosophize anyway they like, regardless of their religious views.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2619743764213415433.post-43175966449901868852017-10-18T11:55:29.375-05:002017-10-18T11:55:29.375-05:00Prayer is not a Christmas list for me. Prayer simply reminds me to recognize I do not have every answer all the time, and to trust in something greater than myself. I pray daily. Since I'd be imprisoned I wouldn't be able to do much. So I'd attempt to take time to release my worldly struggles because they wouldn't matter in a few days. I believe it is not philosophy is not the way to find the answer to all of the questions in life because once those are answered there will continue to be more but philosophies job is to keep humanity from becoming stagnate.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14772779322208098332noreply@blogger.com
