Peripatetics reject Wall-e World

My nightmare vision of the answer to William James's "really vital question" (What is this world going to be? What is life eventually to make of itself?):

If able-bodied young people continue to opt for this

Image result for electric scooters

instead of this,

Image result for walking

will life eventually make this of itself?

  1. I personally believe so. I take it as far as to try to be as natural as I can within reason. I say that to mean wearing more barefoot shoes, getting away from concrete, using herbs and natural remedies along side the appropriate advances of modern medicine so i do not die from a cold.

  2. I think sometimes we make the mistake of thinking our surroundings are what the rest of the world is, but it’s not the case or even close to it. There’s countries that are starving and have never even seen a scooter live, we live in a country where we’re fortunate enough to have anything we can think of. So to think that the world will become like this I think it’s a little blind, maybe our country will I don’t know about the world.

    1. Section 11: I like how in depth you thought about this, I agree that we never really know about the world until it happens. Not everyone even knows about scooters, or skateboards like you said.

    2. Exactly, people don't really know how the rest of the world is going by. this is because they believe that other people are living like them or they just don't care.

  3. Personally, I think this is a very far fetched idea. Sometimes we need things like a razor scooter to get places faster, for instance at school going to a far class. YEt, a nice walk in while is needed.

    1. Sara, can you elaborate more on how this is" very far fetched"?
I'm just trying to get a better understanding on your justification.

  4. I actually stopped taking my bike to classes because I realized I was just getting lazy.

I don't believe society will come to this. We can be lazy at times with all this new technology popping up here and there. But I have noticed that society now places a strong importance on looks and being fit. More and more people are working out and eating better. Especially the younger generation, who are the future of our world. Working out and having a fit body is the goal for many people in our world now. I think the scooters and all that is just for fun, and have really just been used to get to places where walking just won't be a pleasant idea. Of course we will have the lazy people, however a society as a whole I don't believe we are heading down that path.

Funny thing about the humans in WALL-E, they all live to be well over 100 years old!

It doesn't explicitly say their ages but when it shows the pictures of the ship's previous captains, it has year ranges that indicate either their years of service, which are well over 100 years each! "Captain Brace 2521-2645" "Captain O'Brein 2646-2774." That's 124 and 128 years (respectively) of service, meaning they lived incredibly long lives although they were completely sedentary. (Google: WALL-E Captain's ages) While I'm not advocating their lifestyle, it does beg the question: Would you live the "WALL-E human lifestyle" if it meant you could live twice as long as the average human does now?

Personally, I'm not sure. I love the feeling of being able to move, walk, jump, etc... but I also find the idea of living twice as long intriguing. Perhaps you could see so much of the world or space if we had more time.

Is living a long fruitless life where youre actions and thoughts are decided for you better than living a short life un-controlled by the machines?

Part of me thinks that this could be the way people live in the future but another part of me has hope that it wont. There are a lot of people that are obese, but there are also a lot of people that love to be active. I do think if people would get out and walk instead of using scooters then the issue of laziness would decrease in the world. I do not see anything wrong with people riding bikes because this is a workout itself.

It's sad to think of this as even a possibility someday, but we seem to be on the fast-track there. I think it's important to include walking in our everyday schedule, even if it is just to class.

It's a scary thought, but Wall-E has always been one of my favorite movies. I feel like it's a warning to the world that if he dont turn around from the direction we're going in, our future generation's life could look like this.

    1. I agree concerning your statement that Wall-E has in a way been providing us with red lights(warnings) over the years with regards to global warming and our overwhelming reliance on technology.

I don't personally believe this is the future. People will always find reasons and ways to be lazy, and at the same time, people who want to will always find ways to be active. Lack of exercise can be a problem for a lot of modern people, but a lot of these problems are also caused by lack of nutrition. And this isn't often even a choice thing. A lot of times, people can't afford nutritional foods. I had to do three speeches on food desserts in my communication class last semester, and I came across a lot of articles talking about this.

    1. This is true especially with nutritional food. healthy food tend to be more expensive than unhealthy ones which brings up the question on how people who wants to eat healthy but cant afford it will get access.

I think it's interesting how the Wall-E movie was released over 10 years ago and showcases the affects of how humans can be so lazy and wasteful with their resources. We can still learn how to improve society from watching this movie.

I don't think technology really has an impact on someone's physical activity. There are a lot of factors that play into someone's weight. Whether it's a poor diet, thyroid problems, metabolism, or even something simple as not having the ability to exercise. We're fairly advanced technology wise, but there is still such a long way to go to even achieve the things like the Wall-E movie or any other kind of futuristic movie.

  13. Hopefully we see a shift in the future as far as out door activities and more physically engaging pastimes in the youth.

I can see society going in that direction. with that seen the humans don’t even leave their own chairs and can do everything from it. We are almost their if you think about it. You can work from your own home, have all your groceries sent to your house, order food to be delivered to your house. And to top it all off you can do it all from your own phone! Medical has made a great impact on this as well.

So now think back to the 1800’s the average lifespan was about 40 years old (For most of us were either halfway there or just pass it). In my eyes they were more active than we are today. Just because most people would have to either hunt or farm to make a living.

  15. Personally, the way our species is treating the world, we will never come to this. People are talking about how we may come to this, etc. but I do not think we will even have the chance to come to this. This is a very far fetched idea and will happen nowhere in our lifetime. Scooters, bikes, etc still contain some sort of physical activity and convenience. The tech in WALL-E has no chance in our lifetime.

I personally think the world will not get to this. A lot of restaurants now post calorie/ nutritional content on either the menu or online, making it easier for people to make health conscious decisions. As for reliability with scooters and bikes, I feel like more people on campus opt for walking instead of electric scooters, in fact, I rarely see people use those, most of the time if it's electric,it's a hoverboard.

  17. I think the question becomes of what time line are we looking at. Wall-E is based on a scenario where humans have already made earth inhabitable. Being trapped in a ship as a species created a different mentality.
In general I don't think society could move to that due to attraction and how it typically works.

The movie walle predicts an inevitable future where technology rules our minds and lives and we are rapidly speeding towards that future #6

  19. I love this quote by aristotle "It is just that we should be grateful, not only to those with whose views we may agree, but also to those who have expressed more superficial views; for these also contributed something, by developing before us the powers of thought".
