Introductions

Let's introduce ourselves, Spring 2019 CoPhilosophy collaborators. (I'll tell you in class why I call my version of the Intro course "CoPhilosophy." But maybe you can guess, from the William James quote above.)

I invite you all to hit "comments" below share your own introductions, and (bearing in mind that this is an open site) answer two basic questions: Who are you? and Why are you here? (in this course, on this campus, in this state, on this planet...)

Our first class meeting will consist mainly of introductions and a heads-up that this is an unconventional course in ways I hope you'll find delightful, instructive, and rewarding. If you don't like to move, breathe, and converse in the open air on nice days, this course may be a challenge. But, if you don't especially like the conventional lecture-style academic model in which I talk and you scribble silently in your seats, it may be just what you've been looking for.

We'll not go over the syllabus or get bogged down in the nuts and bolts of course mechanics on Day One, there's plenty of time for those details later. Peruse the blogsite and syllabus (linked in the right margin) before next class and let me know what's unclear. Meanwhile, read your classmates' intros and post your own.

I'm Dr. Oliver. I live in Nashville with my wife, two dogs we "rescued" in May (Pita and Nell) and a cat (Zeus). Older Daughter lives in Illinois. Younger Daughter is a college sophomore.

My office is 300 James Union Building (JUB). My office hours are Tuesday/Thursday 11:15-12:45, & by appointment. Graduate Teaching Assistant Jamil Grimes is not officially working with me this semester but he's still a good person to talk to, if you have questions or just want a good philosophical conversation. He's in 300B, next door.

On nice days office hours may be outside, check my office door for details. I answer emails during office hours, but not at all on weekends. Surest way to get a quick response: come in or call during office hours.

I've been at MTSU since the early '00s, teaching philosophy courses on diverse subjects including atheism, childhood, happiness, the environment, the future, epistemology, metaphysics, Anglo-American philosophy, consciousness, evolution, and bioethics.

My Ph.D. is from Vanderbilt. I'm originally from Missouri, near St. Louis. I was indoctrinated as a Cardinals fan in early childhood, so I understand something about religious zeal. My undergrad degree is from the University of Missouri ("Mizzou") in Columbia MO. (I wish my schools weren't in the SEC-I don't approve of the inordinate emphasis on major collegiate sports culture orfootball brain injuries, as I'm sure to tell you again.)

My philosophical expertise, such as it is, centers on the American philosophical tradition of William James and John Dewey. A former student once asked me to respond to a questionnaire, if you're curious you can learn more about me there.

What you most need to know about me, though, is that I'm a peripatetic and will encourage you all to join me in that philosophical lifestyle as often as possible during discussion time. (If you're not sure what peripatetic means, scan the right sidebar or read the syllabus or ask me. Or look it up.)

I post my thoughts regularly to my blogs Up@dawn and Delight Springs, among others, and to Twitter (@osopher), and am continuing to experiment with podcasting as a classroom tool this semester. Follow me if you want to.

But of course, as Brian Cohen said, you don't have to follow anyone. (Extra credit if you get that reference... and real extra credit if you realize that my "extra credit" is usually rhetorical.) However, if a blog or podcast link turns up with the daily quiz (which will always be posted on this site no later than the night before class), you might find it helpful to read or listen.

Enough about me. Who are you? (Where are you from, where have you been, what do you like, who do you want to become,...?) Why are you here? (On Earth, in Tennessee, at MTSU, in philosophy class)? Hit "comments" below and post your introduction, then read your classmates'... and bear in mind that this is an open site. The world can read it. (The world's probably busy with other stuff, of course - Drumpf and Kardashians and cooking shows and other examples of what passes for "reality" these days.)

From a distance, philosophy seems weird, irrelevant, boring...

and yet also – just a little – intriguing.

But what are philosophers really for?

The answer is, handily, already contained in the word philosophy itself.

In Ancient Greek, philo means love and sophia means wisdom.

Philosophers are people devoted to wisdom.

Being wise means attempting to live and die well.

In their pursuit of wisdom, philosophers have developed a very

specific skill-set. They have, over the centuries, become experts in

many of the things that make people not very wise. Five stand out:

There are lots of big questions around: What is the meaning of life?

What's a job for? How should society be arranged?

Most of us entertain them every now and then, but we despair of trying

to answer them. They have the status of jokes. We call them

'pretentious'. But they matter deeply because only with sound answers

to them can we direct our energies meaningfully.

Philosophers are people unafraid of asking questions. They have, over

the centuries, asked the very largest. They realise that these

questions can always be broken down into more manageable chunks and

that the only really pretentious thing is to think one is above

raising big naive-sounding enquiries.

Public opinion – or what gets called ‘common sense’ – is sensible and

reasonable in countless areas. It’s what you hear about from friends

and neighbours, the stuff you take in without even thinking about it.

But common sense is also often full of daftness and error.

Philosophy gets us to submit all aspects of common sense to reason.

It wants us to think for ourselves. Is it really true what people say

about love, money, children, travel, work? Philosophers are interested

in asking whether an idea is logical – rather than simply assuming it

must be right because it is popular and long-established.

We’re not very good at knowing what goes on in our own minds.

Someone we meet is very annoying, but we can’t pin down what the issue is.

Or we lose our temper, but can’t readily tell what we’re so cross about.

We lack insight into our own satisfactions and dislikes.

That’s why we need to examine our own minds. Philosophy is committed

to self-knowledge – and its central precept – articulated by the

earliest, greatest philosopher, Socrates – is just two words long:

Know yourself
We’re not very good at making ourselves happy. We overrate the power

of some things to improve our lives – and underrate others.

We make the wrong choices because, guided by advertising and false glamour,

we keep on imagining that a particular kind of holiday, or car, or computer

will make a bigger difference than it can.

At the same time, we underestimate the contribution of other things –
2:51

like going for a walk - which may have little prestige but can
contribute deeply to the character of existence.

Philosophers seek to be wise by getting more precise about the

activities and attitudes that really can help our lives to go better.

Philosophers are good at keeping a sense of what really matters and what doesn't.

On hearing the news that he’d lost all his possessions in a shipwreck,

the Stoic philosopher Zeno simply said:

‘Fortune commands me to be a less encumbered philosopher.’

It’s responses like these that have made the very term ‘philosophical’

a byword for calm, long-term thinking and strength-of-mind,

in short, for perspective.

The wisdom of philosophy is – in modern times – mostly delivered in

the form of books. But in the past, philosophers sat in market squares

and discussed their ideas with shopkeepers or went into government

offices and palaces to give advice. It wasn’t abnormal to have a

philosopher on the payroll. Philosophy was thought of as a normal,

basic activity – rather than as an unusual, esoteric, optional extra.

Nowadays, it’s not so much that we overtly deny this thought but we

just don’t have the right institutions set up to promulgate wisdom

coherently in the world. In the future, though, when the value of

philosophy* is a little clearer, we can expect to meet more

philosophers in daily life. They won’t be locked up, living mainly in

university departments, because the points at which our unwisdom bites

– and messes up our lives – are multiple and urgently need attention -

My name is McKayla. I am double majoring in Equine Science and Political Science, concentrating on Pre-Law. I would eventually like to pursue a career in Equine Law which is why I am double majoring in law and equine science. I am originally from Connecticut but I moved to Tennessee so that I could attend MTSU. I wanted to originally come to MTSU because of the Equestrian Team here. I have been riding on the team since I was a freshman in 2016. I am now a junior and am still currently on the team.

Hello. My name is Zac Malone. Everyone calls me Malone. I was born and raised in the greater Nashville area and went school at Purdue University for 2 years before joining the US Air Force. I served for 5 years and am now a veteran student in my Sophomore year. I am a Construction Management major. I chose to take this class because out of all the supporting courses that were offered, this seemed to be the most intriguing to me.

Hi! My name is Kathryn Pittman. However, I go by Abby. I always tell people my parents are crazy since they raised me by my middle name. It gets confusing. I was born in Lebanon, Tennessee and have lived there up until a couple of days ago. I decided an hour commute everyday is too much for me. I'm a freshman majoring in Elementary Education, and I plan to teach kindergarten or first grade when I finish my degree. I chose to attend MTSU not only because of their amazing education program but mostly because it's close to home. I'm attending on multiple scholarships, and my tuition is completely covered. My education is very important to me, and I strive to do my best in every subject I attempt. I chose Philosophy 1030 mostly because it was the best option among the humanities courses. And to be fair, I know very little about the subject. I look forward to learning all the interesting things this class has to offer!

Hi, I'm Sara Kate Martin, and I go by Sara Kate. I'm a sophomore and an accounting major. I live in a log cabin made from 200 year-old logs in Belfast, TN; however, I am originally from Chapel Hill, TN. I currently work at Goody's. I love being outside, making origami paper cranes, and watercolor painting. I am at MTSU because it was the most affordable option for me, and I chose this class because I needed another 3 hour class this semester to be full time and this was the only one I could find to fit in my schedule.

My name is Sam Lawless and I am from Knoxville. I grew up there with my mom and dad and 3 sisters. I am the youngest. I took philosophy because I like the questions that are asked in the class. I like to learn about what other people believe and why. My favorite philosopher is Henry David Thoreau. I like him because of his story about Walden Pond. I like his belief of living on the land and being self-reliant while trying to find the meaning of life and all that. I also like the woods and camping and have noticed that when you are outside and away from all the buildings and phones life feels different. It is a lot slower and everything you do is more meaningful.

  7. Hi, my name is Cameron, but most people call me Cam. I am a Pre-Med biology major in my senior year here at MTSU, looking forward to graduating in May. I took this class because I had Dr. Oliver for bioethics, and really enjoyed the class as well as the readings. Not to mention I need the credit to graduate. In all seriousness, I am looking forward to the new ideas this class will present, and the discussions that will ensue.

Hi, my name is El! I am a Political Science major with a concentration in Pre-Law. I have an older brother who is a LPN who is 9 years older than me. I took this class for several reasons. One, I need it as my humanities course! Second, I wanted to see how a philosophy class worked. I've been told by my friends to take the class, but I've been hesitant. I thought it would be something similar to being quiet, and I hate anything to do with being quiet. So, I'm super happy that Dr. Oliver is allowing us to actually stretch out our legs from time to time! My favorite philosopher has to be Thomas More. I love the fact that he was willing to stand for his beliefs instead of simply bowing down to the King, but he was always willing to listen to the King. I also like his willingness to stand for logic and reason, looking at an issue on both sides. That is also my philosophy. I strive to look at both sides without bias instead of simply looking at one side. I look forward to this class!

Hi, my name is Myia Wright (pronounced My-UH). I am a sophomore here at MTSU. I just recently changed my major from pre med to political science with a concentration in pre law as well as a minor in psychology. With my major, I would eventually love to either become a criminal lawyer or an immigration lawyer. I was born and raised in Alaska but it was time for me to explore what the rest of the world has to offer. To get to Tennessee I drove across the country and experienced a lot of cool things in many states. I love traveling. I am traveling to Cuba, Alaska, and Hawaii this year so I am pretty stoked for what 2019 has to offer. I have now lived in Murfreesboro for about a year in a half but once I graduate MTSU, I plan on moving again. I am at MTSU because I toured campus my senior year of high school and fell in love with the atmosphere and the WARM weather. I have yet to regret a single day of being here at MTSU and in Tennessee. Other than traveling I enjoy hiking, going to concerts, and being around the people I love. I am also the proudest dog mom on the planet to an 11 year old Shitzhu named Scooter. I go to school fulltime, work fulltime, and I am a lifetime member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, so as you can see, I stay busy. I am in this class because I need the credit but I love deep thinking and looking at life more than the surface level. I am on earth because, like all of us, I have a purpose to be here. What that purpose is, I haven't quite figured out and maybe I never will but I am enjoying the journey. Thanks for reading and I am excited to get started with this class!

Hello there, I'm Jordyn Rice (or Jordyn Alexis, whichever you prefer). I'm a sophomore, which is crazy to think I'm already four semesters into college >.< Where has the time gone? I originally wanted to go to the University of California at Bakersfield, but out of state tuition is WILD so my little heart set it's sights onto MT and I'm so glad I did. It's the perfect distance away from my hometown of Memphis, Tn which allows me to travel back home or for my family to come here and see me. I'm a biology major with a physiology concentration and a forensic anthropology minor. I'm on a pre med path, one of my goals has always been to work in the medical industry. It started with wanting to be an Xray technologist, blossomed into radiologist, and finally I've settled with the ever so achievable goal of working in orthopedic surgery. When I'm not at school, my love and absolute passion is barrel racing, I'm a competitive barrel racer, I own three horses; Dusty, Roman, and Rogue. I've been riding horses since I was 2 years old and competitively riding since I was 10 years old. I would say my purpose is yet to be determined, I feel that no one person has one set purpose in this life, there are so many new things to learn in the world and eventually contribute to society.

Hello, my name is Regine Chapman (if you are wondering how to pronounce my first name say Regina but end it with an "e" instead of an "a"). I got my name from a tv show called In Living Color (why my Dad picked this name I do not know), but I love it because it is unique and quite rare. I was born in Charleston, SC and raised here in Murfreesboro. I still call Charleston my hometown despite being in Murfreesboro longer. I have an older brother who lives in Los Angeles pursuing his music career while I am here pursuing my medical career as a pre-med biology major. I love to read so much that I was able to form a relationship with my high school librarian, which allows me to check out books from my high school even though I am no longer in the system. I also love to cook and listen to music. I am taking this class because in order to get closer to my future career, it is a hurdle I must overcome, and philosophy is an interesting subject that may become something I enjoy. I am on this planet because my grandmother wanted another granddaughter (she only had one granddaughter so far with the rest being boys). As you can see her prayers were answered. I moved here from SC because of my Dad’s job promotion and the only people who managed to escape this city is my brother (in Los Angeles) and my Dad (in Columbia). I am hoping to join that list if I am accepted in to the medical school in Charleston or Columbia. I am looking forward to meeting new people in this class and having a wonderful time as well.

Who am I? Who am I? I am the guardian of lost souls! I am the powerful... Ok, maybe I am not powerful, nor am I a tiny red dragon. However, I am a senior majoring in biochemistry, and go by the name Nolton. The reason why I am in this class is because I want to receive my diploma. Also, I took bioethics with Dr. Oliver 2 years ago and really enjoyed the class. I am looking forward to the topics we will discuss, even though the classroom may be exceptionally small.

I'm Joslyn. I'm here to study Geology and become a park ranger for NPS, and Philosophy 1030 is an elective that I have chosen. Philosophy CAN be interesting... If I'm honest though I get pretty bored with it. Life's pressing questions have many answers, most of which are personal and situational. To give a single explanation is cutting yourself and the question short, but its "such a drag" to put in the effort for a complete explanation and can be almost impossible. But here I am taking this course anyway. I think having a general understanding of Philosophy will help me better connect to the public when I move on to my career as a ranger.
I am pretty excited to read the books for this course. I've read a few chapters from each already (I can't resist peeking in a book).

Hey everyone, I'm Steven Rhodes. I recently moved to Nashville with my wife and two cats. We were going to stay in Atlanta after I left the military, but she received a promotion, so here we are. I'm transferring as a senior, but I'll be at MTSU for at least three years to complete my upper division requirements. Currently I'm a Physics-and hopefully-CompSci major.
I chose to take this philosophy course since I love to read, even though I wasn't the best student as a kid. I hope to have my views challenged and find new ways to look at life.

I am in this class because I needed the credit and it seemed more interesting than some of the other choices. Plus I know nothing about philosophy and figured why not. I am at this school because I came to the campus and loved it. Some people posted their jobs they have, I'm not really working except for being a supplemental instructor for a and p 1. I collect spoons and smushed pennies from the places I travel. I hope that this class helps me look at life in a new way and give me a better understanding of things.

My name is Kory Cooke. I'm a junior here at MTSU studying Political Science with minors in Psychology and Philosophy. I've lived in or near Murfreesboro all my life, but I left for the University of Minnesota for my freshman year of college. I was optimistically hoping to major in Materials Science and Engineering. I was aggrieved to learn that I had made a mistake, not because I had misjudged Minnesota but because I had misjudged myself. I moved back home and transferred to MTSU, and I am now happily on track to graduate in the fall of 2020.

My own personal philosophy is very much a culmination of the axioms of the thinkers I've studied at length, which I would say is very Jungian and Nietzscheian world view, with a little Dostoevsky. That is to say, I believe that the most fundamental truths to human existence are suffering and malevolence, however I share Jung's sympathies that the existence of an archetypal evil to avoid must therefore be proof of an archetypal good to strive for. I think to search for meaning and to live a meaningful life, with all the responsibility and hardships that entails, is a deeply human effort to universally fight for the side of that archetypal good.

I am here at MTSU because I finally decided that the time was right to return to school and finish my degree. I chose this class for the credit and scheduling convenience mostly, but I was also looking for a class that might be different from a traditional lecture/note-taking style class. My name is Holden. I am currently underdeclared at MTSU as I came in with something in mind but quickly realised I made a mistake. Two more major changes and I said "screw it, I'm going undeclared." So here I am, a second year freshman becuase I changed my major too many times. Anyways... philosophy. I love philosophy. It has always been very fun to me to try and understand why people do what they do, say what they say, think what they think, etcetera. I like to say I'm too curious for my own good, because it's very much true. Psychology has been something that has intrested me for a very long time so, naturally, philosophy comes along eventually as there is a lot to learn from it too. I hope to be able to use what I learn from philosophy as a way to look at everything from another perspective as to help understand things better.

Hello all, my name is Andrew Hooker and I am an aerospace major here at MTSU. I'm taking this class as a requirement for my concentration of professional pilot, but nevertheless I know I will find interesting things to ponder over when I am not buried in aerospace courses. I come from an eclectic background which involved a fair amount of moving around the country for most of my 29 years here. I've lived in major cities including Philadelphia and Boston, as well as Texas and here in Tennessee. I've lived in all the major cities in TN aside from Chattanooga. While I do like some aspects of urban life, I very much prefer living in less urban areas, and prefer being surrounded by the natural world. A life dream of mine is to own land out west near the Rockies. The most important things in my life are my relationships with others, my career, personal pursuits and personal goals. I look forward to getting to know all of you better.

In regards to my own personal philosophy, speaking only for myself, I have found that the more simple I can make things, the better. I'm a straight forward person and have little reservation when I feel I need to speak my mind. You'll come to find I'm highly opinionated about certain things, but despite that I do my best to keep an open mind.

As to why I'm here? you can never really tell but I would like to think that my purpose here would be to help sick animals. If some higher being has a plan for me then its just out of my hands but if not I look forward to shaping my future on my own terms.

Hey everybody, my name is Cole White! I'm from Jackson, Tennessee and I'm currently a 2nd semester freshman. I am majoring as a Pro Pilot and I'm using this course to fill a GenEd requirement. I'm at MTSU because of its flight program and, well it was either here or Embry-Riddle, which no one likes so my choices were narrowed quickly. But nevertheless I do enjoy this campus!

  36. Hi, my name is Emily Lloyd and I am in my second semester as a freshman. Unlike everyone else, I am still undecided about my major. This is the main reason why I decided to take Philosophy, a subject that I barely know about. I thought it would be interesting to try something new and this was one of the courses for GenEd that I could take. I am from Smyrna and I graduated from Smyrna High School last year. I do have a job, I work at Publix and I have worked there for about two years now. I don't work as much since I have school, but it's still good to make a few money on the side. I live with my mom and my dog Howie, a Yorkie Terrier. Overall, I am looking forward to learning about Philosophy and talking with the class!

My name is Matt Lopez. I was born and raised in/near Dallas, Texas. I'm majoring in exercise science with hopes to be a physical therapist one day. I'm an army vet that was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY which is about 45 minutes north of Nashville. I decided when I was done to stick around and finally decided to get back in school. I am in this course because I have always been interested in philosophy and would often hang out in my school library to read the works of Aristotle and Plato. I look forward to an interesting time!

    Cheers.

Hi everybody, I'm Jada Mostella, and I'm from Knoxville, TN. I'm a freshman, and I chose to pursue an anthropology major; The subfield I'm most interested in is the study of human cultures. I'm not sure if philosophy is the right class for me, but I have always been interested in analyzing perspectives and political topics, and with my major, analyzing how different cultures affect them. Taking this course hopefully will give me the opportunity to gain insight on my own culture's philosophies, while I study others'in my major classes.

The reason I am in this class is because I needed one more elective to graduate and I also have wanted to study philosophy for most of college. I've never been able to find time in my schedule until my last semester of college and I'm really excited for it. I look forward to really learning about it, and being able to put some of that knowledge towards music philosophies.

Hello, my name is Will Stallings, and I am a freshman studying Audio Production here at MTSU. I grew up in Murfreesboro, and graduated from Central Magnet School off of the square. I chose to enroll in this class because I have always been interested in the way we think, question things, and the little details that make us unique. I feel that the skills taught in this class will be useful as I move forward in live, so I am eager to learn. I don't know much about philosophy, but I am excited for that to change.

Hello - my name is Jacob Dean, and I'm a Freshman Audio Production student. I was born in Illinois and was raised there for about nine years, where we then made the move to Greeneville, Tennessee to be closer with family members that we had in the South. We have lived in Tennessee ever since, which eventually led me here to MTSU and to this Philosophy course.

I decided to take Philosophy because I thought it would be an interesting class. I have always been intrigued by both Philosophy and Psychology, and while I was not able to take them during my time in high school, I'm glad that I still have the opportunity to take them during my time in college!

Good morning, my name is Gabriel Hirsch, and I am a Junior majoring in Concrete Industry Management. I typically go by Gabe in social settings, and I go by Gabriel in more formal or professional settings (either one is fine though). I was raised in Clarksville, Tennessee for the first eighteen years of my life. I completed my first year of undergrad at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, but due to the excessively high tuition bill, I decided to transfer to MTSU.

I am taking Philosophy, not only because I believed it would be an interesting class, but also, because I am hoping it will serve as an eye-opener or some form of enlightenment to guide me throughout the rest of my life. The whole college thing is still a confusing journey to me, so any advice or teachings provided by this class will hopefully help.

  57. Hello, my name is Anna Wasik and I'm a junior here at MTSU studying chemistry. I've lived in Tennessee all my life - born in Nashville but lived in East TN for the past 5 years. I am mostly taking this class because I needed it and it fit in my schedule but I believe that I'll be able to take away something of value from this class from time to time. I have taken a "philosophy of science" class before and it was terrible - with that said I have high confidence in this class being more thought-provoking instead of being futile and just plain confusing.

My name is Pablo Avila and I'm majoring in Environmental Sustainability and Technology. First, I don't know why I am on this planet, but there are theories of procreation involved. However, MTSU sold me for it's Geology program and my interest of renewable energies to implement them for daily use. I am interested in Philosophy so I can keep an open mind, and read different ideas (I swear I did not copy the person above me). As for the class, I need more convincing, but I think I'll enjoy it.

Hello! My name is Abriana Gonzalez. However, I usually go by Abree. I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Although, I have live in Murfreesboro, TN since I was one year old. I am a freshman in college and have not yet decided on a major. I originally was going to attend Austin Peay State University to get out of Murfreesboro for a while. Shockingly, I decided last minute to stay home and not leave my friends behind. In all honestly, I registered pretty late this semester and for that I had to take this class. Which does not really bother me, I am a pretty open minded person and willingly open to try new things. Only thing that I am nervous for is, I lack knowledge on this subject and have no clue what I be in for.
I am excited to see what this class has to offer and looking forward to a great semester!

Hi, my name is Emily and I'm from Mount Juliet ,TN. I'm majoring in fashion merchandising, and want to eventually have my own clothing line one day. I love to travel, go on hikes, go to concerts/ festivals, and go thrifting. My main goal in life is really simple: I just want to be happy and live on the beach. I think a lot of people make life out to be lot more complicated than it actually is. I'm here because I needed this course for a gen ed, but I'm into getting to know what other people think- i'm very open-minded. I think I'm here on Earth to bring light/love to the planet and to help people. I could be completely wrong, buut thinking that gives me a sense of purpose.
