The Philosophy of the Purge (&Neoliberalism) Installment Two

http://cophilosophy.blogspot.com/2017/12/the-philosophy-of-purge.html - Part 1

This is my final installment. In my previous post I discussed the overall philosophy of the first purge movie. In this post i will go a bit more in depth and touch on the second and third movies.

                        THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE PURGE

In the second film: The Purge: Anarchy, we see the affects of the neoliberalistic economy and the purge on a working class family. The working class cannot afford to protect themselves from the purge and ultimately end up being the victims. Some even sell themselves to be purged by the rich in order to help support their family. The inner city is the place where most purging takes place which is unfortunate for the poor and working class because typically that is where those classes reside. In the second film a sick old black man sells himself to a rich white family in order to support his daughter and grand daughter.

In the third film: The Purge: Election Year, we see the purge against a small business owner. The day before the purge, Purge insurance goes up by thousands of dollars for no reason. Due to the Neoliberalistic economy, the Government cannot regulate insurance companies. This leaves the working class members to protect their own homes and businesses with what little they have.

Why the Purge wouldn't work:

As humans we have the possibility to be violent creatures when provoked. Most of us use illegal drugs despite the fact their illegal- for the thrill of it. Killing another person doesn't provide the same thrill and comes with more mental consequences than benefits. It is in our nature to not do things that are morally frowned upon(such as murder). If an idea such as the purge ever came up i think it would be shot down immediately. I feel as if the lack of participation in the purge would ultimately destroy it anyways. It is overall, not a good idea.

What are your thoughts about the Purge? Do you think this could be a possible future for our country? Other countries? Will the poor and working class always be screwed over no matter what economy?

For those of you that are into the Purge- there is a fourth film coming out in 2018. The Purge: The Island.
