Pessimism (#10)

In the world we live in today, you have the pessimistic and optimistic roaming around the place, although there are still other points of view out in the world. Majority people just tend to be more optimistic because it sounds better and makes everything seem better. Everyone likes to look at the bright side of things because it's less scary and you don't have to worry, but does being optimistic really help you survive the world we are living in today? I believe that being pessimistic is more beneficial in life than being optimistic because it doesn't get your hopes up. Thinking the worse during a situation can actually have a better outcome because your options are more realistic. Society just tries to make thinking faulty seem like

a bad thing because it brings the mood down for everyone. Granted you have to think the best during some complications to keep your cool, but the obstacles that life throws at us, why would you want to think the best? That brings us back to the society and their way of reasoning. They want us to believe that being optimistic will actually get us through life because we would want to prevail through all the barriers we keep facing, but that's not the case. Our hopes will be too high that once something finally knocks it down, we will be continuing falling. At least if we thought pessimistic, over the years, our feelings wouldn't be hurt and we would be used to the type of results that came from situations.
In the next installment, I will be talking and elaborating more about Leibniz and his philosophical optimism on whatever is, is right...because that is not entirely true.

  1. I think I lean more to the pessimist side. I like to think worse case scenario so I can prepare myself for what might could happen. I have always had anxiety and I think it is because I tend to be pessimistic. But I rather live realistically than to live with my head in the clouds and have no clue as to what is really going on in the world. I think even optimists are having a hard time staying optimistic considering the way the world is going these days. It is just easier being a pessimist.

  2. I think optimism helps keep people in a mentally sound state. To automatically assume the negative on every aspect of life would lead to a very depressing existence (for me, at least). If I was never optimistic, I would not be goal oriented, trust anyone, or try to put effort into tasks because I just wouldn't see the point.

  3. I personally both pessimism and optimistic alone is ignorant. I love the quote “The pessimist looks down and hits his head. The optimist looks up and loses his footing. The realist looks forward and adjusts his path accordingly.” -Robert Kirkman
I think everyone should aim to be a realist, it makes life easier personally. As someone who used to be generally more pessimistic, it gets boring after a while being so depressing.

  4. There are benefits to both. Being one or the other solely is not beneficial. I am often told that I am a pessimist because I think about worst case scenario (as Hayley said). But it helps to prepare me for the future. I am also optimistic as I always hope for the best. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

  5. Being pessimistic in some situations is good, same with optimism. I just think we should have a firm grasp of what is and most likely is not real.

I consider myself an optimistic person, but I occasionally force pessimistic thoughts on myself so I won't be disappointed if things don't work like I wanted. There are benefits to each side. I realized at a young age I'd rather prepare for the worst.

  7. I agree that pessimism is important to making the right decisions. In the sense of better safe than sorry, the claims you make in here align with that thinking. However I do believe that it is important to show signs of optimism of times, because the grass will eventually get greener.
