How
does black hair reflect black history?
Did you know that the art
of braiding hair stared in Africa where they would determine what hairstyle and
clans or tribe you was from just by the way your hair was braided, the woman would always keep their hair
braided by the other women in their clan or tribe. This also told was away to tell if the women was single ,married , or widowed
but they was instructed not to com their hair daring the time of grieving and
mooring of their husband, because they was not allowed to be active to other
men daring this time. The art of and transition of was the way to pass down the
Aral history to the other generations so the elders in the community would
braid the younger girls hair and teach them. Why teaching the younger girls how
to braid natural hair, the elderly would tell them the history of their hair in
what it symbolized as a young African lady. Their hairstyle was what the people
went by when it come to their clan or
tribe and social status according to Rumeana Jahangir from the BBC News "Just
about everything about a person's identity could be learned by looking at the
hair," says journalist Lori Tharps, who co-wrote the book Hair Story about
the history of black hair. Natural hair styles has been around since the 1990s,
slaves took many of their African
customs with them, including their specially-designed combs. "Their key is
the [bigger] width between the teeth because African-type hair is very
fragile," says Dr Sally-Ann Ashton, who curated an afro comb exhibition at Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum in 2013. (http://www.bbc.com/) Civil rights era made a big
change for the natural hairstyle for example Afro hair style, which emerged in
the 1960s during the civil rights movement, was "a symbol of rebellion,
pride and empowerment", says Mr Lynch. As black people protested against
racial segregation and oppression, the eye-catching style took off - an
assertion of black identity in contrast to previous trends inspired by
mainstream white fashions. And with it the African (or afro) comb re-emerged.
"It was never lost in Africa of course," says Dr Ashton. "But
this was with the advent of black power and politics. ( http://www.bbc.com/) This made black family get blacker in to their
roots and History that would change the future of the African American Catcher.
This hairstyle became very popular for a lot of people who were born in the
1980s and 90s. My mom was had Afro when she was growing up and so did her
siblings. Different celebrity like Michael Jackson, Bob Ross, Erika Badu, and
Bob Marley in the 1970s, with dreadlocks. The history of natural hair can often
be for gotten in the 20s century Growing
up my grandmother, mother and older cousins would keep my hair braid ever 2
weeks just so it could grow and be healthy but also keep me looking nice. The
first I ever got my hair braided it was April 1995 I was 3years old.
At this
time different hairstyles was really poplar In the 1990s you had hairstyles like
the short, cropped hairstyle some people called it the celebrity “Halle Berry or the Toni Braxton or the
Nia Long, but the short haircut was one of the most popular hairstyles of the
'90s. From Halle's slightly longer hairstyles” (https://www.theroot.com/ ). leading up to 1995 Box braids where also
called Poetic Justice braids. These according to Rumeana Jahangir from the BBC News “braids were also worn by Jamaican singer Patra, who released
her debut album, Queen of the Pack’’. (https://www.theroot.com/
). Then you had Micro braids where they are small
this is an all-day to install this can cost you a lot of money like $150 to $
250, they last longer than the box braids like celebrity Brandy. Then you had Finger waves like celebrity Missy Elliott this a method
of setting hair by dampening with water or wave solution and forming waves or
curls with the fingers and a comb. Then after that you had other Celebrity who come out with their own hairstyle for example Aaliyah swoop and wrap wrapping your hair every night guaranteed a longer lasting, celebrity Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas who rooked
the Baby hair hairstyle then you had something that called the Sock buns hairstyle is a simple way to make sure your
bun was full and flourishing hairstyle different Celebrity was always change
the hairstyle like Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins had made the hairstyle mushroom or called the black girl hair
hat because it a short, almost-bowl-cut-style hairdo, where the bangs are long
and the back hangs at about the same length, other Celebrity like the late Whitney Houston had
the French roll hairstyle was designated
for days when your hair needed a little extra flair if you need a fancy updo
for a wedding or special occasion in The ’90s .(www.theroot.com/ ) come hairstyles had it good trends and bad trends. The biggest trending thing
that hit the hairstyle market during this time was the sleek perm. A permanent wave,
commonly called a perm or
"permanent", involves
the use of heat and/or chemicals to break and reform the cross-linking bonds of
the hair structure. The hair is washed and
wrapped on a form and waving lotion or 'reagent' is applied”.
Then you have Contemporary definitions for hair weave. noun. A process in which a hairpiece is interwoven with
real hair to conceal
alopecia or increase the thickness or length of the hairstyle. (http://blackhairmedia.com)
You have Different type of
natural hair and texture that goes by number and letters that how the African
Americans knows what type of hair they are.
1 type of straight
hair “Straight hair is classified as a 1. Straight hair reflects the most
sheen. It is also the most resilient hair of all of the hair types. It is hard
to damage and next to impossible to curl this hair texture. Because the sebum
(natural oil produced in the sebaceous glands of the scalp) gently works its
way from the scalp to the ends without the interference of curls or kinks, it
is the most oily hair texture of all.”
2 types of Wavy Hair “Wavy hair lies somewhere between straight and
curly hair. It also imparts sheen, more than curly hair, but less than straight
hair. The further down the wavy spectrum you go the less sheen the hair will
impart. Wavy hair is typically more prone to frizz. While type A waives can
easily alternate between straight and curly styles, type B and C Wavy hair is
resistant to styling.” you have
Wavy 2A. Wavy 2B. Wavy 2C. Curly 3A. Curly 3B. Curly 3C. Kinky 4A. Kinky 4B.

Type 3: “Curly Hair If you
pull a strand of a type 3 curly, you will notice it has a definite S shape.
Granted, the S may be a lower case s or upper case S, or it may even resemble a
Z on some occasions...however, there is a definite curl pattern in place, with
our without products. This hair type is full bodied, climate dependent
(humidity = frizz), and damage prone. Lack of proper care renders dull curls.” Curly 3A, Curly 3B, Curly 3C
Type 4: Kinky Hair “Despite
many misconceptions, this tightly coiled hair is quite fine and fragile. It is
wiry, and delicate by nature. Each strand usually has a zig zag pattern. Kinky
hair is the driest hair type, thus it is more prone to breakage and requires a
gentle touch. A misconception exists that this hair type does not grow. Kinky
hair grows at the same rate as other texture, however, if not treated properly
it breaks more than other textures. Treat this hair type like a fine silk
blouse – cleanse gently, detangle softly, and avoid harsh chemicals.” Kinky

As a follically-challenged person this is all beyond me. The images of those beautiful women with their beautiful styles are, well, beautiful. Can you say a bit about the importance of hair in establishing identity and self-awareness, individually and culturally? What's your philosophy of hair?
ReplyDeleteI got my first perm when i was two and almost a year and a half ago i decided to go natural and it has been a very exciting journey. I'm still in the process of trying to figure out my curl pattern. I have worn almost all of these hair styles except the Halle Berry cut and the mushroom. It's amazing what our hair can do.
