Batman is one of the most complex characters ever to appear in comic books, graphic novels, and on the big screen. What philosophical trials does this superhero confront in order to keep Gotham safe? Combing through seventy years of comic books, television shows, and movies, Batman and Philosophy explores how the Dark Knight grapples with ethical conundrums, moral responsibility, his identity crisis, the moral weight he carries to avenge his murdered parents, and much more. How does this caped crusader measure up against the teachings of Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Kierkegaard, and Lao Tzu?

The fictional character of Batman has been around for decades. First appearing in DC comics in March of 1939, and created by Bob Kane, the timeless story of Batman has gained a thriving reputation that will be discussed for decades to come. Batman’s winglike cape was actually inspired by a sketch by Leonardo Da Vinci, exemplifying the artistic talent and background of author Bob Kane. Batman’s characteristics and superpowers consist of genius level intellect, peak physical and mental condition, skilled martial arts and hand to hand combat, expert detective, and the ability to utilize high-tech equipment and weapons. This action filled series is unrealistic, but is filled with thought provoking ideas and a complex philosophy that has allowed it to thrive.
Batman is constructed as an ideal human with an ideal set of morals. The bleak and simple question, “why doesn’t Batman just kill the Joker and end everyone’s misery” fails to allow the audience to think deeply. This question contradicts Batman’s character completely. Murder is illegal in today’s society and is found to be a sin in many religions. If Batman is a lawful and moral character, it would not make sense for him to kill anyone. Batman believes his attempt to save and protect people as well and try and change the way the Joker lives seems to be a way of living with compassion and a clean conscience. Although Batman hates to see innocent people suffer, it is his main goal to be proactive instead of reactive. If this dilemma did not occur, the plot would not be complex not interesting enough to hold a sufficient audience required for a successful series of comics and movies. This moral conflict draws the audience in and makes them think about their own set of morals. An ideal human displays perfection, and perfection eliminations gray areas. Humans are flawed unlike the fictional Batman and are plagued with imperfection and ethical dilemmas. Batman does not want to stoop as low as the Joker, and he made a pact with Gordon to not become what they hunt.
If the Joker is mentally ill, it is hard to say that we can hold him morally responsible for his actions. Will serial killers ever change? Does incarceration in modern day society create a moral compass? This character mirrors criminals in the real world and provokes ideas such as the morality of the death penalty or lifelong imprisonment. If someone is unable to possess moral responsibility, then how can they be held accountable? Psychopaths will never feel guilt or regret. So no, I do not believe we can hold him morally responsible; however, I believe it is important to remove him from society so he can not harm anyone or do anything destructive. For people who are psychopaths, it is our responsibility to use logic and reason, as well as ethics to make decisions.
Batman and Superman are both different but also the same.If the people in the city of Gotham followed Batman, then their lives would improve because they would have perfect morals.
