#10 Ancient Atomism

Summary

This presentation will be discussing some of the various aspects of ancient atomism. We'll first look at what atomism is and how it is regarded today. We'll then look at the origins of atomism such as who invented the idea and how it was developed. After that, the challenges that ancient atomism faced with regards to individuals such as Aristotle and Plato, and to early Christian ideology. Finale, the idea itself, including how the idea of atomism came about and how it was interpreted.


Quiz (answer during presentation)

1. Who invented the theory of atomism? Who later developed it?

2. Ancient atomism has aptly been described as what?

3. Why did atomism suffer from keeping what was held to be bad company?

4. Where did the idea of atoms come from?


Discussion Questions

1. Does atomism pose a threat to religion? Today?

2. If atoms have different shapes, then they have parts, and this means that they are mathematically divisible; if they have different sizes, then among the infinity of their number are there atoms as big as the world or bigger?

3. Is mereological nihilism, the metaphysical doctrine that objects with proper parts do not exist, the same as atomism? If not, what are the differences? How can mereological nihilism work?

    Discussion Questions:
    1. In various aspects,mothers are possibilities that atomism does challenge that of relief and today's religion in general. Being that, this theory goes beyond that of the questionable aspects of science, the idea then begins to battle that of religious beliefs.
