Solvitur ambulando

Word(s) of the day: “solvitur ambulando” - ‘it is solved by walking’ (Latin). Diogenes, then St Augustine, Thoreau & Chatwin, inter alia.

  1. It is solved by walking.
If I had any heroes, I suppose St. Augustine would be one of them. What a brilliant mind and philosopher.

Solvitur ambulando may have more meaning than a first glance might reveal. I remember my baseball experience as a young man. Whenever I would get hit by a wild pitch or a bad hop at shortstop, the coach would say to me, “walk it off.” Walking may have greater powers than just resolving haunting paradoxes or antinomies.

    1. I'd love to talk baseball with you sometime, George. Maybe take in a Sounds game? By the way: Stephen Jay Gould, the evolutionary biologist, had a terrific baseball book you might enjoy: "Triumph and Tragedy in Mudville: A Lifelong Passion for Baseball"... and baseball figures prominently also in his "Full House"... See, more potential common ground!

    1. If you liked that, Brandon, I'll bet you'd love Rebecca Solnit's "Wanderlust: A History of Walking"...

Happy trails! And happy tunes!! Good luck with your expanded family, wherever you wander.
