Weel one: In Lecture I James tells his general non academic audience and readership that each of you has a philosophy but adds that our most important philosophies are dumb. What does he mean? Do you agree?

James states that most of our most important philosophies are dumb. I believe he is correct in a way. One example is what Vega posted ,when people say it's God's will. They could be talking about something like they got a bad grade or a car crash or something or a drug addiction. We

all do make some excuses but people need to realize that hard work dedication and disipline might have been able to correct some of these things rather than " it's God's will". Perhaps the person that got the bad grade should have studied harder. perhaps the person that got in the car crash was going to fast or not paying attention. Perhaps the person with the drug addiction should not have tried it in the first place or if they do have and know they have an addiction just stay away from the drug and anyone who uses drugs.

I have to say I do believe in God , but I do not believe that if you stand on a freeway with cars going 70 miles per hour and say God will protect me and you get killed is not the way to believe in God I think God expects you to have sense and use your brain and not do dumb things.

One example and I think people who like baseball might agree with me. Ok some players like the greats Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Mark Mcguire , and Sammy Sosa were home run kings. They went to bat and swing for the fences.Barry Bonds lifetime batting average is .298, Wher the highest is Ty Cobb with .366. It seems all the homerun kings had lower batting averages and think more of winning and breaking records rather than make their teams win and just get on base.

In conclusion I am not that tough minded and I do respect almost everyone's philosophy on things but if it is illogical and causes you and other people harm I do not agree with it.

Joshua Ledford.

  1. Hello Joshua,
I like your philosophy of respecting “almost everyone’s philosophy,” except when it is illogical. It doesn’t matter which philosophical camp one falls into (monist, pluralist, empiricist, rationalist, pragmatist, Marxist, etc.) they all must rely on Aristotelian logic. I would also throw scientists and engineers into that category as well. However, we would be hard pressed to find any politicians using logic.

  2. James meant our philosophies are originally "dumb" in the sense of inarticulate, inchoate, interior, unverbalized,pre-intellectual... "For the philosophy which is so important in each of us is not a technical matter; it is our more or less dumb sense of what life honestly and deeply means. It is only partly got from books; it is our individual way of just seeing and feeling the total push and pressure of the cosmos."

Of course, the more you philosophize publicly about your "individual way of seeing and feeling..." the less dumb it becomes in THAT sense, but the more liable it also becomes to striking others as dumb in a less charitable sense! Occupational hazard of the philosopher...

Talking baseball (though I don't quite see how this is an example of what we're talking about with respect to personal philosophies): Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa were good... Ruth and Aaron and Mays (and, I hope, Pujols and a few others) were genuinely great. We'll never know how natively good the Steroid Guys really were. Very good athletes, no doubt. Lesser men.

What I mean by the philosophy in baseball is play for yourself or play for the team.
