Internet and Society

While many people frown on the internet and how social media affects our society, I believe it has affected us in a multitude of ways that are beneficial. In one aspect, we can now communicate with people like never before. I know that this has affected communities such as the deaf or socially anxious community in a great way. Most people who do not belong to the deaf community have very little or no understanding of sign language. Social media and the internet has allowed these people to express themselves and communicate with others more effectively. Those with social anxiety disorders now have ways to express themselves without fear of ridicule or other issues. The internet has also allowed us to, in my opinion, increase the knowledge and awareness of many. For example, many young adults are more involved than ever in this election because of its heavy presence in social media. I believe the Internet has helped more than harmed in our society.

  1. I would argue that the internet hasn't helped our society, but rather changed it. While it has helped some people like you mentioned in your post, it has also caused some people to become recluses, relying on internet communication as opposed to real life.

    1. Yes, it may have caused those few to become recluses, but I believe that they probably had a disposition to become that way anyway if it was so easy for them to go into that reclusivity.

  2. I can see your point in that the internet has helped some people, but it has also harmed others. While it can be a tool for expression and communication, it can also cause people to have decreased social skills if they are always behind a screen.

    1. Exactly and I mentioned that, but the point is that you must weigh these two against each other? It is hard to weigh these objectively but it something we must consider because no matter what happens in society good and bad will always be present.

  3. I agree that the internet is good, but I do not think it is being used properly yet. Also, I do not agree that the use of social media in this election has been as much of a good thing. many lies and misconceptions have sued people that were spread over social media outlets. Some of the social media use has been good, but I also think it is to blame for the gross negative divide in our country.

    1. I agree that it did cause a lot of problems in the election, but the amount of people that were actually invested in politics for once was amazing. I agree that it does cause a large divide but at the same time it does bring us together.

  4. It can be extremely beneficial, however, it can also be detrimental. As long as individuals use it in a positive manner, but that is not always the case. Social media can contribute to depression by creating an artificial social setting or by creating a platform for bullying. Sometimes the things we think are humorous are actually hurtful.

    1. I agree with you on those and it is so bad when that happens. It just becomes a matter of weighing the good over the bad just like with all things in life. I am aware however that I do hold a hugely unpopular opinion on this subject.

  5. I think that to some extent that is correct we have more input from more sources now that we have the internet but I believe that it is also important to look up and see the world around you
