Finding enjoyment in Plato at the Googleplex

I have been struggling with enjoying this class all semester. Philosophy has proven to not be my favorite subject and I felt as though I was wasting my time with this class. However, as I was reading the section in Plato at the Googleplex this morning I found my self understanding it. More so, I found myself inserting my own opinions into the conversation. I had not expected to enjoy this book at all. I do though. I still do not identify well with Philosophy but I have at the very least learned from this class. I find myself actually excited to finish the book. Learning about these people in a story way has proven to grab my attention much more so than reading accounts of the philosophers from Russell. Reading Russell's book has been difficult for me for two reasons. First it is almost a history, and I do not enjoy history (except of psychology).  The second reason that I found reading Russell difficult is that it is labeled a History of Western Philosophy, but it is filled with biases and opinions. If I am going to read a history of anything I want to be able to be able to make my own opinions without being swayed because I read it in a biased tone. I have the other book that was mentioned at the begging of the semester, but I have ignored it because I thought it was Philosophy as a whole that I did not agree with. Now, though, finding that I enjoy Plato at the Googleplex so much, I plan on reading through it Little History. Hopefully it does not have the biases that were my issue with the Russell book. (H1)

  1. Plato at the Googleplex provides a completely different vibe than History of Western Philosophy. I think that this appeals more to different crowd, and is a more interesting read

  2. I agree with your opinion of The History of Western Philosophy. I too would rather read something unbiased in order to formulate my own perspectives. However, I think it can also be beneficial to expose yourself to such reads.
