Substances

On monday, we talked about 3 different philosophers and how many substances thet believed to exist in the universe. Spinoza had one all encompassing substance which was God or also called the universe itself. He described this as where all things could be simplified down to have come from 1 thing: God/the universe. Descartes on the other hand had a belief that there were 3 substances in the universe. These were the tangible or physical, the ideas in our minds, and God. Descartes believed that all things could be simplified into one of these three categories. Lastly, Leibniz believed that there are an infinite number of substances. That everything in the universe is its own substance, its simplest form or identification.
Considering these three views, I have thought on how many substances I believe to exist. I agree with Descartes on three substances. However, i disagree on what they are. In my mind, everything can be brought down to the physical, the mental (ideas and processes of the mind), and the spiritual (in regards to the soul and spirit). It is very similar to Descartes with only 1 difference which is God. I am not a christian in that I do not have a belief in this got per absence of proof in my mind so I had to cross off Descartes third substance and create my own identification for it. My question to you is what do you believe on this matter? Who do you agree with? Or do you agree with none of them?

  1. (H3) I more closely degree with Descartes but I don't know if I would 100% agree.

  2. I agree more closely with Leibniz, I think everything is it's own unique substance (H3).

  3. (H3) I also agree more with Descartes, but I would follow with what you're saying in regards to the spiritual substance.

  4. I would say that there was at one time only one substance God. Then from that one substance came a infant substances.

  5. H01 I most closely agree with you. Everything can fit in those three categories, and I am not a Christian either. I believe the spiritual category is still important though as your beliefs affect not only you, but everyone around you.
