On Oct. 25, the John Seigenthaler Chair of Excellence in First Amendment Studies will host a panel discussion about the role of free speech on campus -- an issue roiling on some campuses at a time of heightened political polarization. Should students be protected through university policy from offensive or hateful speech? Do restrictions chill the intellectual freedom of both faculty and students? How do you promote an inclusionary learning environment? And what happens when free speech values collide with concerns about the effect of hate speech? The panel will include Ken Paulson, dean of MTSU's College of Media and Entertainment and a First Amendment expert, Joseph Cohn, legislative and policy director of Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, and Northwestern University communications professor Laura Kipnis whose op/ed in The Chronicle of Higher Education prompted a Title IX investigation.
