These question have been mulling around
in my mind this week. Is there a standard of good and bad? What makes things “good”
or “bad”? Who determines these standards? How do these standards affect
everyday life?
And my response to these concepts is
this: Our society today has a set standard to morals. These morals have
developed our laws and responses to individuals breaking those laws. With that
being said, a saying my mother always used to say to me comes to mind: perception is reality. What individuals perceive as wrong or immoral are
innately wrong to them. In the same sense, individuals who perceive something as right find that idea to be morally sound.
This is where I find that the grey area of good and bad come along. Take the
idea of sex before marriage. There’s a group of religious folk who will
vehemently push the abstinence concept. Then there are others who don’t really
care what you do with your own body on your own time. To the latter group, this
isn’t a moral inconsistency. But to the first group it’s a sin and therefore
wrong. There is no accepted standard when it comes to this concept, and in turn
that creates a lot of rifts in moral society and modern day thinking.
The idea that perception is reality is a very strong one, and one of my favorites.

ReplyDeletePerception must be reality if you have no absolutes. There can be no truth without an infallible absolute. H3
