Are We All In a Cave?

(H3) Is America itself similar to the cave which Plato described? Americans and American media are so self-absorbed in solely what happens in America. When we take a step back and look at what actually know about what is going on with the rest of the world it is very minimal information. Most countries make an attempt to learn the culture and important news of other countries. America is a great country which most of the world looks up to but we only make up 3% of the world's population. If we only know 3% of what is going on in the world then we have a skewed world view.
Like Plato's metaphorical cave, would we immediately reject what we saw when looking at the rest of the world? I believe many would but a percentage of individuals would want to embrace the rest of the world outside of our own perspectives. We are so blind to what goes on in the rest of the world due to our news hardly ever showing the country what is happening around the world, we are a country often focused on ourselves. Today I learned that the company Apple, the most prosperous company in the world based out of the United States, uses indentured slaves over in China to create their products. Another example is that America is considered to be the #1 leading terrorist state but that is never reported. We are blind to so much going on in our country and in the world around us that it is often like America itself is "the cave" we face today.

  1. I agree in that America is a sort of cave as Plato describes it because America and its citizens tend to be extremely self-centered and they typically do not care about the outside world, just what is in front of their faces.

  2. While this may have been an accurate viewpoint 50 years ago, we now live in a time where the world is the most interconnected it has ever been, thanks to the Internet. We can hear about what is happening in the most remote regions anywhere in the world if we have the desire. And while I agree that most pop culture comes from the us, a lot of culture in other regions of the world is the same as the us, so I don't think the arguement of America as the cave is valid
