The show impacted culture. The “Rachel” became the most
famous hairstyle in the early 2000s, with women requesting to look just like
Jennifer Aniston at their beauty appointments. Catchphrases like, “How you
doing?” became part of western slang among teenagers.

The finale of Friends is one of the main reasons I believe
the show has had continual success. The writers of the show claimed that they
didn’t want to “Take the show out of the show,” which is something that is too
often done on series finales. 52.5
million viewers watched the finale in the US, making it the most watched entertainment
telecast since Seinfeld in1998.
For years there
has been talk about a “Friends reunion,” but I don’t think it could nor should
ever happen. Friends came at a time when viewers needed hope. They needed these
characters to feel better about their everyday lives. And they ended the show “with a sense of a new beginning and the
audience has a sense that it's a new chapter in the lives of all these
characters.” I don’t think they should ruin that. The great part is that you
don’t really know what happens to them when the show is over. It leaves you
feeling that the new chapter has begun, but you can fill in the blank for
yourself.

My daughter is one of those "later generation" types who discovered Friends. She says she doesn't think it was a very good show, and yet she watched most of the old episodes on Netflix. THere must be something powerfully compelling about it, to get her to do that. (What would Aristotle say?)
