The plot lines of Friends are all fairly simple. Each episode has the same title, “The one with the…” For example, “The one with Monica and Chandler’s wedding,” was about Monica and Chandler getting married. Most episodes are predictable. You know what’s coming, but that’s the great part about the show. It’s comforting. You’re able to see where the characters’ lives are going and it helps you with guiding your own.

The show impacted culture. The “Rachel” became the most famous hairstyle in the early 2000s, with women requesting to look just like Jennifer Aniston at their beauty appointments. Catchphrases like, “How you doing?” became part of western slang among teenagers.

The finale of Friends is one of the main reasons I believe the show has had continual success. The writers of the show claimed that they didn’t want to “Take the show out of the show,” which is something that is too often done on series finales. 52.5 million viewers watched the finale in the US, making it the most watched entertainment telecast since Seinfeld in1998.

For years there has been talk about a “Friends reunion,” but I don’t think it could nor should ever happen. Friends came at a time when viewers needed hope. They needed these characters to feel better about their everyday lives. And they ended the show with a sense of a new beginning and the audience has a sense that it's a new chapter in the lives of all these characters.” I don’t think they should ruin that. The great part is that you don’t really know what happens to them when the show is over. It leaves you feeling that the new chapter has begun, but you can fill in the blank for yourself.

With the ability to stream Friends via Netflix and other platforms, a younger generation is able to watch and enjoy the show. Warner Brothers most popular tour is of the "Central Perk set" in LA, where fans still travel to see. Singer, Taylor Swift, recently brought out Matt LeBlanc (Joey) to surprise fans onstage and Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe) onstage to preform a duet of the song "Smelly Cat" which was made popular by the show.  Friends is still a well known TV show and still as relevant as ever. I think the universal theme is what keeps the show alive: Friends are your family.

  1. My daughter is one of those "later generation" types who discovered Friends. She says she doesn't think it was a very good show, and yet she watched most of the old episodes on Netflix. THere must be something powerfully compelling about it, to get her to do that. (What would Aristotle say?)
