Summary Group 1 (14)

Our group discussed if "A belief is worth dying for?" We debated the ideas of dying to be a martyr for sentimental reasons, or if it is more effective to renounce beliefs so that they may be taught in other places. Our discussion in class also moved to the ideas and motives of the "martyr" Socrates and of his renowned pupil Plato. We talked of erotic love and the theories of erotic love according to Aristophanes, "Socrates," and Alcibiades.

  1. Dying for one's beliefs sends a strong message. But what kind of beliefs would be worth dying for now?
Can anyone name a belief that they would be willing to die for?

Do you agree with Aristotle's belief that things you don't know about- even events after death- contribute to your eudaimonia?

"renounced" beliefs in a particular region could stimulate interests in another region by the exclusiveness of the belief. Interested parties in a region or culture would be attracted to the idea of being apart of a belief that was prohibited in another place, but is this more effective than someone dying or killing themselves for a belief and then the news of that spreading? Well, one is more exclusive I guess.
