Section 13 Group 2 summary

Today in class we split up into our midterm project groups to discuss them. My group talked about who was doing what, and when we could possibly meet up to talk to another professor and get some more insight and stories from him to include in our presentation. We talked about whether or not being gay is a choice, and how Dylan tends to bring up the most controversial topics in a rather blunt and forward fashion.

Haha indeed he does. My midterm subgroup also met for the first half of the peripatetic discussion to make sure everyone knew their individual duties for the project. After that I joined Megan's subgroup in their discussion. I enjoyed talking with these guys on the balcony. Everyone had great input to our conversation about homosexuality and it was especially interesting to hear Dylan's opinion that it is a choice. Definitely sparked up a good debate. He also asked a great question, on what grounds does the government have the right to stop someone from committing suicide. Before I could mention religion, Phil brought up a great point that the government by law cannot use religion as grounds to stop someone from jumping off a bridge. So why do the police show up every time someone's standing on a bridge, ready to jump? Should they? Maybe it's a morality thing? Cool discussion, thanks for letting me join guys. Here's my FQ, DQ and link:

FQ: Which two animals did Machiavelli believe an effective leader should learn from and imitate?

DQ: Some would argue that blasphemy against one's religion causes that person more harm than physical harm. Do you?

  2. I really wish we could have stemmed off the governmental protection of life to what the point of life is. It is a question I have heard and pondered on various occasions, and would just like to get other people's input/thought.

FQ: Machiavelli was chosen to visit a political leader whom he admires--to discover his plans and report them back to Florence--whose father was the Pope.

DQ: Machiavelli suggested in his book "The Prince" that the obligation of a prince is to maintain his state as a prince. Would you agree with this? Why? If not, then what do you believe is the obligation of a prince?

    1. DQ comment: I don't think we use our rights significantly at all and the rights we do have such as voting are restricted by the government. In voting the electoral college distorts the campaign and makes the focus on specific states and also a possibility for someone to win the popular vote and lose the election. The rights we do use are used for insignificant protests or social media posts. In my opinion, I think we wait for something blow up before we start trying to fix it. Were satisfied with what we have and don't disagree enough to make our lives about fixing something.

  4. Sorry I am REALLY late putting into our discussion on Wednesday; I got some troubling news back home. Megan, Dylan, and I have interesting discussions. I feel that we all pick each other's brain well; igniting odd, controversial, but intriguing conversations. They stray off into personal memories sometimes, but usually that will lead to another philosophical debate. Wednesday we discussed animals and if or if they don't have morals more, if being gay was a choice, and if suicide is really wrong or what the point in life really is. It was a good day in all. Ready for today's discussion.

FQ: What was Machiavelli's play called that is still sometimes performed today?

DQ: Could the concept of Coercion be proven necessary, during times like the 15th and 16th centuries, while having leaders like Machiavelli around?

  5. FQ: Machiavelli's main idea in his book was that a prince needed virtu. what does virtu mean?
DQ: do you agree with Machiavelli that success depends 50% on luck and 50% on your actions< however your actions can help your chances of overcoming bad luck?

  6. My subgroup met and discussed our group project and determined which angle each of us would be coming from with our This I Believe essays. I am taking an atheist point of view, Savannah will be taking from an agnostic point of view, John will be coming at it from a religious perspective, and our other group member will be adding in a scientific perspective. I think the contrasting points of view will be a great dynamic, and will make for a great project.
