Section 10; Group 3- Discussion Summary 4 September 2014

Today, our group took on two questions for discussion.

First off was the question, “Can an ignorant person be wise? Can a knowledgeable person be ignorant?”  We first acknowledged our own bias towards considering ourselves knowledgeable, or at least seeking to obtain it in the traditional sense since we are all enrolled in a university.  Then we talked about how we have to define wisdom and ignorance before going further.  We also came to the opinion that the situation you are in could help define those words.  For example, if you are in a remote tribal region of Africa, what is considered knowledge at MTSU would be worthless.  Knowing how to hunt, gather, fish and survive in the harsh conditions of tribal Africa would make someone wise there, but it isn’t needed to be on campus.  We also came to a consensus as a group that your credentials don’t always equate to knowledge.

Then we shifted onto the idea of “perfect love” in a relationship.  We all agreed that such a concept seems to be flawed due to all the variables involved.  We also discussed the differences in relationships from the past- with special consideration given to arraigned marriages, accepted gender roles- and compared them to the processes of finding love today.  This discussion was cut short by the bell.

  1. I'm going to authorize the bell-ringers to cut ME short, to leave a minimum of half an hour for post-quiz discussion. That should be doable, now that most people seem to "get" what we're doing and the FQs/DQs are going up on the board a lot faster. That'll also make time for Floaters, and for Peripatetic discussions too (just as soon as the heat wave breaks).

DQ: Do you agree with Voltaire's often misunderstood line "Si Dieu n'existait pas, il faudrait l'inventer" ("If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him")

As an aside, this was not meant to question the existence of God. Further reading here.
