Group 2, Section 10 Discussion 9/9

Tuesday's Class: 9/9

Our group discussed whether or not someone can feel or understand happiness without ever feeling or knowing what it is like to be sad. Group members also brought up knowing the differences between joy and happiness, the innocence factor in children, and being able to find a balance of happiness and sadness.

  1. Factual questions:
    1) True or false: Plato, Aristotle and Pyrrho all shared similar philosophical views
    2) Epicurus's school in which he taught philosophy was known by what name?
    3) What was the name of Lucretius's poem in which he summarized the key teachings of Epicurus's school of philosophy?

    Discussion Questions:
    1) Does the thought of death make the experience of life more enjoyable?
    2) What is a miracle to you?
    3) Would you prefer your existence simply ended with your death, or would you want to have an immortal afterlife?

Reading about Epicurus gave me the impression that he never really let anything get to him or make him worry too much. He had a very laid back view on life. Because of this, Bob Marley's "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" popped into my head. I figured it was appropriate for Epicurus.

Al Green also did a song called "Everything's Gonna Be Alright'. Different song, different words, different melody, but the message is pretty much the same.
