The starting salary for a tenure-track professor at a public institution like ours is adequate in monetary terms, and in life-satisfaction terms (on the best days at least) it's priceless.
Don't choose your career/vocation/life for the money alone. Happiness and a feeling that you're doing something worthwhile is worth quite a lot.
