Oliver's Favs

Today we discussed psychedelic drugs and philosophy.  Dr. Oliver mentioned that Hegel used Nitrous before coming up with philosophical conclusions.  During our group discussion Dr. Oliver mentioned Timothy Leary, who was a 20th century thinker.  Leary was an advocate for LSD and had his ashes launched into space.  I thought that was cool.  We also talked about biological evolution as well as cultural evolution.  Is it possible, in the future, that we could match levels of biological evolution with cultural evolution?  In my opinion, unless we have some extraordinary breakthroughs in the scientific realm, I doubt we'll ever be able to speed up biological evolution, at least during an individual lifetime. In other words, cultural evolution happens much faster than biological. Thoughts on this?

  3. No, HEGEL didn't use nitrous. William James did, mostly to poke fun at Hegel's style of writing.

  4. FQ: who did Kierkegaard often resemble when he walked around town in conversation with a companion? (Socrates)
DQ: The book states that Kierkegaard wasn't appreciated in his lifetime but later on. Why do you think we don't appreciate philosopher's when they're alive?
